Now quote the rest, you know, the bit about us being outside it.
Macrons view. You left, get over it.
It's amusing , you say Macrons not trustworthy because he's French , but you take him or leave him as suits.
There will be life after Boris, you'll be poorer and weaker and the road will be long but the Boris fan club will drop him sooner or later. Macron is there for the next 5/7 years , Boris mightn't last 5 days or 5 weeks , who knows how much can be stomached.

You part-quoted Churchill, at least have to courage to quote the whole of it.

French presidents are constitutionally limited to a maximum of two five-year consecutive terms, so I can't see where you get seven years from. Macron was running against a neo-Nazi, and he still got less than 60% of the votes, against a fascist... ! :banghead:

Yes, of course Boris will be binned eventually, that's what happens to all Tory leaders and most others once they cease to be vote-winners. You're stuck with Macron who will be pretty much immovable, what about his 'reforms', that never come to be? And, of course, l'éléphant dans la pièce, there's the rate of French economic growth under him, it's going to be great, more of the last five years, but this time you know what it will be like. :ROFLMAO: :)

I just read the speech and he didn't really spell out Britain's role. Although he did discuss the Council of Europe which we're still full members of.
Which is in itself part of a larger volume of work regularly conveyed over the years, most succinctly expressed in a Zurich speech of September '46, in which he makes it very clear that he sees the UK outside of any prospective European confederation, being but a friend and supporter of it.

True although that made more sense at the time because of the Commonwealth. When that diminished in economic importance we joined the EEC. Now we are where we are.

Not that Churchill's views a lifetime ago should influence what we do now. But it is interesting.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt as to that - Freudian? - pun*. He really isn't inspiring and, like so many modern politicians, will run a mile rather than answer a straight question with a straight answer that doesn't suit his agenda.

Yet now there are so many other forms of trade, and so many other countries with decent economies that it still has validity.

Churchill was an historian, and a very good one, but of course he had his own bias so everything has to be seen with that borne in mind. Yet his knowledge and understanding of the practical aspects of history still has value - after all, we still look to Thucydides.

*the usual spelling being 'galling', but I agree that the frogifying of it does make a lot of sense ;)

If you mean this bit, it never existed. It was a composite of bits made up from a 1930 speech and a conversation in 1944 put together by Brexiteers, who claimed he said it in the HoC in 1953.

We have our own dream and our own task. We are with Europe, but not of it. We are linked but not combined. We are interested and associated but not absorbed. If Britain must choose between Europe and the open sea, she must always choose the open sea.”

There was a reference by some Europhile who stated that Churchill was in favour of the EEC. I have a recollection that he was but not what this finally turned into without consultation of the British people until 2016.

No I mean the reference I gave to the very well documented - and published! - speech he made in Zurich which was well know long before Brexit was even thought of, or the EU existed. (y)
