Maize 2020

Im not convinced on the plastic yet. It would need to yield more in my book, to justify the extra cost.
Will be handy having a field ready earlier to be feeding some, but a better way would be to carry a few bays in the clamp over from the year before, so its properly fermented.

Bonnie drilled 5th May. No plastic, plenty of pig muck. That rain last week did the world of good .

After some advice. All of my maize went in late this year (25th of may) due to taking a cut of hay of first. most of it is doing as expected, however I have one field that has really struggled, emergence wasnt great and now the leaves have yellow patches on them. It Had the same treatment as all the rest ( good dose of fym pre ploughing and 100kg/ha of 42/9 urea + s at drilling. I have sprayed everything else but not this field as I don't want to stress the plant any more, what would everybody recommend? Everything is due another 100kg/ha but lack of rain on the forecast has me holding off. ( Apologies for rubbish photos)

Maize can look a bit yellow at that stage, the good news is its only temporary. A bit more N and could help.
I wouldnt delay spraying. Weeds will stress the crop more and I’ve never noticed spraying stressing maize.

Yeah I'm just waited for some rain on the forecast before I put on any more N, I've never noticed spraying stressing the crop either but I've never had a maize crop do so poorly, it's the poor germination I can't understand.. every other field it seems every seed germinated, this one is more like 1 in 3, I wondered about leather jackets but I've had a dig around and can't see any.. I'll have to see how it goes, it's only 8ac out of 64

I’ve seen plenty locally that’s been seriously scorched by spraying it during that hot spell two weeks ago.
Don’t spray if it’s over 20 deg or in strong sunlight .

The only other thing I noticed is that seedbed looks a bit cloddy. Another pass with the power harrow would get better soil to seed contact, especially important in a dry time.
