how long does maize take to be at its most palatable? never fed any to my cows in my life and taking 800kgs off a neighbour every other day as an experiment for a few weeks.

Had a few kgs leftover in the bucket so tipped it for the dry cows and they pretty well turned there noise up at it, been ensiled 3 weeks and gone trough a shredledge machine. just abit surprised thought they'd be mad for it...

Always been told in an ideal world you shouldnt feed maize in the same year it was cut, but can start feeding on january 1st. Never seen anyone able or willing to do that though.

Apparently maize pretty much will only get better the longer its left (within reason) as long as something else doesnt ruin it - like moisture or oxygen getting to it from a ripped sheet etc

Did your milk jump?

Not yet but fats & proteins are now over 10.5. According to wisdom, maize needs 6 months in the clamp to ensure that all the starch is available but there are new varieties that make their starch available immediately. We will probably try an acreage of those next year and clamp the bulk separately.

Anyway, the real star of the show

Went where the new pussy tractors feared to tread .. was on towing out duties (including the chopper uphill from a hedge at one stage) then put on a trailer because the 6215 was bogging down.

reminds me, on modern tractors why does there need to be cab /side mounted exhausts emissions i guess ?or just vanity, because they sure as heck add unwanted heat , weight and cost....(n)

Give me a Deutz over a Fendt any day. I’ve been told that in Germany, Deutz outsell Fendt by more than 2:1!
And Deutz engines in Deutz tractors are very reliable, which in Fendt’s, they certainly are not!
