Still cold and the soil ain’t that warm so not stressing that we haven’t finished drilling
we’ve not started
That is the way forward. Granted, you probably have more rain than us, and your soil is easier to work, but I look with despair around here at the clay soil that is being dried out by ploughing then not drilling for ages, then they wonder why it doesn't yield. This after the greedy sods have had a crop of rye sucking all the moisture out all winter.Been doing a bit of experimentation

be interesting to see where the yield will be in relation to the conventional method next door

You need to spray off 2 weeks prior. Or longercost is the major driver even without the current high diesel price.
Was working at 20 litres/hr as opposed to 55 l/hr for power harrow and similar for plough and subsoiler
doesn’t work in grassland as too much root mass to contend with making drilling uneven

Top one strip till, bottom one direct drill?
Both continuous maize? Weeds glyphosated first?

@sjt01Part of the problem we have is this is estate land and we get moved around often on to fields that are grazed only days before we get access.
I think strip could work in to grass but probably one pass winter , burn off 3 weeks prior to sowing then another pass but root mass is an issue
Strip till into aftermath of first cut silage, sprayed off before silaging. Works well, but here in the East often needs irrigation as the grass will dry the soil out.
Depends how fast you'll feed it out, if feeding fast and narrow pit None required here.Trying maize for the first time here in ni. Getting a bit ahead of myself, but what do experienced growers recommend for additives come harvest time?
Dunno. Never have used anything. Last I looked it was $1/ton. Would it return $2 in milk/feed value? Doesn’t appear so, so we left it out.Trying maize for the first time here in ni. Getting a bit ahead of myself, but what do experienced growers recommend for additives come harvest time?
