Maize fertiliser plan.

How are people doing with their maize fertiliser?

Type timing and total please.

Have done it differently the last few years due to circumstance not plan. Always drill 25 units with the seed but have been an additional 25-75 units either trop dressing at 18 inches high or working it into the seed bed. Depending on the field and year.

Having seen the effectiveness of a foliar N spray i'm not sure if we shouldn't do more with the drill and more with the sprayer as late as possible.

Always put between 34-70 units on post drilling plus dap down the spout. Always was told putting n on after the plant is growing risks scorching the plant either prills or liquid. But the agronomist does seem to be putting more concoctions in the post spraymix

2000kg/ha of 8-4-12 suspension fertiliser with manganese and didin nitrification inhibitor In the seedbed. Really impressed with how they’re doing and have had comments about it. In my opinion the nutrients need to be in the seed bed as we’re getting such dry weather the maize isn’t picking it up if bag applied post emergence.

Ive just put 40l of Ndurance 28 on a field of maize that has only had muck in the seed bed and no starter fertiliser, I’ll take some pics on Monday when I go and check on it. Have had good results in the past with this method as it’s slow release. Needs to be put on as late as possible possibly combined with DAP at drilling

I put about 50 units on as liquid last Sunday morning, as we had a damp morning.
It was put on a bit later last year and ended up scorching it and stunting some plants.
Looks like it’s not scorched this year.
This crop was drilled 2nd June and had fym and a little bit of DAP in the seedbed

I remember timac agri having a special fertiliser that was put in the seedbed but didn't release the nitrogen until later in the season when the crop needs it and went be scorched. How much it costs and whether it's any good I wouldn't have a clue but it's there, would be interested if someone has used it

A maize fertiliser plan? All sounds a bit technical to me.

Soil test. Apply what is needed in the seed bed, use a decent starter fertiliser (these are all invariably based around DAP or MAP) and be done with it. I would agree that some fields/farms may need to add N + K and probably sulphur alongside the starter they use but certainly not all and certainly not every year.

I've had farmers try various combinations of starter fertilisers, varying amounts of nitrogen applied by fertiliser spreader post-em, various liquid or suspension products applied by sprayer never came to the conclusion people were getting better or worse crops than anyone else. There is definitely a place in my view for foliar phosphate/manganese/magnesium products where a crop is showing signs of them but applying these to big areas routinely is going to get expensive fast. What maize wants is good hot weather.

If you had a maize crop with a genuine deficiency of nitrogen or potash you would definitely know about it very soon after emergence. I've seen these in the USA but I've only ever seen a few isolated patches of it in the UK. Biggest problem around here is compaction, slumped soils or waterlogging. Good seed bed and rotation is worth investing more time in than spraying on micronutrients.

50-60 tons/ha cow poo incororated before cultivation and then about 100-200 kg/ha NP20-9 at 2x2 at drilling, depending on how much P left on the quota. Nothing post drilling.
About 155-160 kg available N/ha total, as that is the quota.
Average yield about 12-13 ton dm/ha.

I’ve changed the plan in the last couple of years. Now base on a max of 100kg N/ha, 40 of this goes in the seedbed as 27.0.0.37. Having calculated the value from the slurry/fym applied I may top up, have only done that to a couple of fields this year. One had a cut of grass so no slurry specifically for that crop.
Mostly on chalk, never get mega yields 14t/ac is the budget. High P and K so no need to spend on that.

I have some knee high by July this year which doesn’t always happen. I will use maize boost or similar if necessary, thought I would with the rubbish May this year but the crop kept going so didn’t in the end.

Weed control is more important than getting fert spot on with maize

Interestingly my son is working in Ontario, he’s been putting p & k down the spout and pre drilling. N is injected as liquid after emergence. That’s for forage, strip till based system

I have some Omex N18 liquid fert spare and wondering about apply some to our maize which could be doing better? Concerned about scorch, perhaps 100l water and 100l of fert?

Don't know about water rates but in the states we'd spray nitrogen as late as a high rise sprayer would allow without any problems.
