Maize is dire on dry ground.
Will harvest next week but plants have sprouted 3 empty cobs and plants are just above knee high.
As can see from photo. Smut also a problem this year. Only second time we’ve seen it here.
Plenty of heat units this year. As posted in another thread:
First field in the clamp, Emmerson drilled 24 April yielded 15.3 tonnes/acre at 36% dry matter (average of 6 oven dried samples). Hard to believe the dry matter for first week of Sept, but oven dried at 105°C to constant weight, 6 reps from 33.77 to 37.6%

My Glory cobs are turning rock hard, struggle to get a nail imprint. Plants still very green yet. Its very early for Lancashire, it was cut 29th October last year.

How can you get it growing that high up?Several going now. Looked in at mine end of last week and was surprised by how the cobs have ripened recently and that's on top of the hills at 830ft.
