Maize harvest 2018

Some cut a couple of weeks ago here, wasn't ever going to make a good crop so they decided to get it out of the way, probably aided by the fact that the field is in very good view of a reasonably busy road and was being talked about! Crop was waist height.

Maize is dire on dry ground.
Will harvest next week but plants have sprouted 3 empty cobs and plants are just above knee high.

As can see from photo. Smut also a problem this year. Only second time we’ve seen it here.

Plenty of heat units this year. As posted in another thread:
First field in the clamp, Emmerson drilled 24 April yielded 15.3 tonnes/acre at 36% dry matter (average of 6 oven dried samples). Hard to believe the dry matter for first week of Sept, but oven dried at 105°C to constant weight, 6 reps from 33.77 to 37.6%

How did you get your weight off the field?

How long does it need in the oven?

We have a Griffith Elder single axle weighbridge.

I put it in the oven in the evening, weigh it early morning and check weigh at lunch time. We use an old domestic fan oven fitted with a PID temperature controller with a thermocouple sensor. One thing that we are looking at is an air fryer for drying.
