Maize height

My advisory team are telling me to go as soon as it dries up now, whether ready or not.

Out of interest, what does your maize crop look like and at what stage are the cobs? I am amazed how far North maize is grown as it can be dicey enough growing it in Cornwall some years:cry:

Good luck with the harvesting and hope it all goes well. To make you feel a fraction better, if my eyes didn't deceive me yesterday, I saw a field of corn still waiting to be harvested locally.

I would class most areas of Cornwall as less favoured for growing maize particularly the north coast.

It's below what I would expect as an average sadly.

It has had stress at some point which has led to most plants wasting energy by double or more cobbing. I found one the other day with 5 cobs on:eek:.
Which has led to the delay in ripening:(. A nice week or 10 days would see me over the finish line.

Revised target is 15 T/ac @30%Dm/30%starch.

Well my revised target was way off:ROFLMAO:.
Early november was when we managed to get it off. In not too bad conditions really as some wheat was put in in very short order afterwards.

It was well ripe by this time so that had several impacts.
Firstly in yield as it came in at a little over 12/t/ac at 42dm, 32 starch and 11me.
Then the second headache was because it was so late coming in it would have been late December before i could feed serious quantities. This is towards the end of my service period, so i would have missed out on much of the benefits, as well as the problems with diet change etc.
Finally due to the maturity of the crop, digestibility was suboptimal at 66.

Taking all that into account, the decision was made to over year the maize.
This has two main benefits. Firstly i can feed it from the get go this calving season, giving me the full power of the stuff.
Secondly, maize improves the longer it is in the clamp. Over yearing it will hopefully push the digestibility into the 70,s, further enhancing its benefit. This is common practice in the states for example.

Mine was May drilled after a cut of silage. Yours is in a whole different ball game.
Another positive was that it did outyield my other energy crops even in what turned out to be a very challenging year for the crop.

Apologies for what turned into an unusually lengthy reply for me and good luck(y).
