Making concrete panels??

The National Rivers Authority used to have a depot in Essex to make concrete flood defence blocks. It kept a few people occupied when they had nothing else on but a review showed it was cheaper to buy them in.

Yes, trouble is a review also showed that it would be better to get rid of the National rivers authority and replace it with the EA. That went well!

made my own gateposts
cast concrete walls in situ
gate posts cheaper/easier to buy, ( and handle )

tend to use telegraph poles, we can buy them, and straining posts, cheaper than anything else, steel posts, bought a job lot cheap, and do occasionally weld up some very heavy duty ones, for the yard.
The worst bit about concrete ones, if you hit them, wood and steel, bit more resilient.

concrete has relatively jigger all tensile strength its the steel in it that has that, calling concrete reinforced is wrong way around ir, should be called concrete clad steel . concrete just protects the steel from the elements and holds it all in place and is cheaper than steel for a mass or area coverage.

only one way to have a gate swinging reliably for years and yrs and that is welded hangings on a steel post galv. or painted with tar / bitumastic paint every few years (applied in in summer.)

i cant abide dragging in the ground gates droopy or twisting hinges , poor latching . and i wont tolerate people who fit them as ive had to sort out too many over the years even some ive done myself . Lol.

gateways can take some stick, once saw a chap take out hanging and falling post, going through a gate, 40 yrs on, still can't see how he managed it, but he did.
field concrete posts, are fine, until somebody hits them, and then its a new post, much prefer wooden posts away from the buildings, more flexible for adjustments.
love proper gates, but, every autumn we pinch field gates, for calf pens, and never seem to go back in the same place, so never quite right.
A lot of our 'internal' gate ways, are now electric spring coils, great, very little trouble. We only have 6 road/field gates.

Can you imagine the EA making their own concrete products today. Holy £*$%& in a handbasket. 17 of them would be in A and E within minutes with concrete burns on their hands and feet from mixing it by hand whilst not wearing gloves and walking around in it in their sandals.
