Making Decisions

That "don't look back" thing is what I find difficult. I often find myself regretting the most minor of things from years back that didn't matter then and matter even less now. I can't shake that one and regularly have to shake myself about it.
Other than that I come to my decisions after a few days of thinking about it. My head is full of little boxes and everything has to be in it's box. It takes me a few days to get them all in the right boxes but once there I am happy.

I used to look back frequently, until I started learning a musical instrument. I was speaking to a performer I really admire,(Kris Dollimore) and he said, "If you play a bum note, let it go. You can't catch it and bring it back!" Since then, I have tried to apply that philosophy to life. Believe me, it helps.

I'm quite a deep thinker and in that respect farming is quite good because often day to day you have to crack on and make the most of the weather, soil, stock or whatever conditions on the day so I don't over think those. However I find the longer term, strategic decisions (those that have to be discussed with the family) much harder.

The biggest decision I've ever had to make by far(certainly business wise, can't recall any other in any part of life that needed such thought) was buying the farm just up the road that we'd been renting for a couple of years.I asked the then owner if we could do a deal privately and that's what eventually happened.. You do your budgets and it's achievable but a major commitment...getting the funds wasn't straightforward and at one point it looked like the deal wasn't going to happen and I tried to convince myself that it was for the best if it fell by the wayside.
I wasn't at all sure what I wanted for a week or two and then I heard that another local farmer had been in to see about buying it and that kept me awake for a few nights..,that's when I knew for sure that I wanted to take the risk. The collapse in the milk price is making things pretty difficult just now but whatever happens I'll have no misgivings about giving it a go.
I heard someone say years ago that if you've got a really difficult decision that's a 50/50 call, toss a coin, you'll know which way you really want the call to go before the coin hits the ground..

If it's a REALLY big decision then I like to make sure I've got together all the facts and figures that are necessary and that I have spoken to the people who are best served to give me advice ..... and then after that I will always seek the advice of MrWF because as much as he drives me wild with many of his shenanigans  .... there is no ones advice that I trust or value more than his.

My worst decision making is in buying anything for myself. If something is costing a few hundred pound for the children I just get it if it's what they want. If it's something for me that's costing a fiver or less I'm umm'ing and arh'ing and working out if I really need it. I'm like a hopeless twit when it comes to spending small sums of money
