Making Tax Digital

@Woolless i am just making the change too, I guess your business is not that large as you would have had to change earlier.
If you have not been required yet I believe you do not need to submit your first digital VAT return till june. I have the same issue and have gone for xero.
It is ridiculously easy to change, I have always done my books on Excel and could have used bridging software but would definitely recoment the change.
Xero do offer a 30 day trial and I used this to see how it went over Christmas . I have now joined my accountants group about £20 a month
Dext is good but I felt unnecessary for me with only possibly 10 invoices a month.
Also I worry that doing these things automatically you lose the constant touch and the danger of allowing wrong invoices through.
Good luck
Yes we were under the turnover threshold for doing it earlier. Good news that the first digital return isn't until June.

What do you get for £20/month in the group?

I believe you get full function , but no payroll , employees expenses. Dext is another £20 a month
Speak to your accountant and possibly any friend who uses it.
Do not be afraid to link it to your bank account ( s ) , it immediately recognises so much
It does take a bit of thinking through and your accountant should help you there.

£20 a month    :eek:ferkin ell, accountant £40 odd a month as well, WHERE is all this money supposed to come from?

Quickbooks costs me £12 a month (which is bad enough imo) and I think the equivalent Xero package is only slightly more. They do cheaper subscriptions for simpler businesses.

There’s no way I would be paying £20/month for a simple Ag business, let alone paying extra for apps to upload your invoices (which you will have to physically check and split anyway, unless they are incredibly simple).

OOps silly me, not £40, nearer £50, yearly accounts divided by months. I don`t know how that much either, everything in order and on a spreadsheet as well.

So i will have to do my paper vat as normal then pratt about taking pictures of all the invoices as well:facepalm:
Bliddy government.
Won`t have time to farm before long. (is this a gov ploy to get rid of us smalleys.

Xero can be as simple or complicated as you want to make it. Over 90% of my transactions are repeats…grain sales, spray, fert, repairs, water, electric, rent etc often using similar suppliers. All my Screwfix purchases are automatically allocated to repairs for example. Same with E.On for electric. WaterPlus for water. Jewson for hire. etc etc.

All I do when they show up on the statement is click ”OK” to approve it then add a photo of the invoice. 20 seconds at most. It’s so quick and simple mainly because I almost never buy goods from a supplier that fall into more than one category. Thus the computer automatically knows what’s what. No typing required. All on basic Xero package for £9 a month.

Get your suppliers to send your invoices by email, then you will be able to just shift them across. I still print mine though as well

Been on quick books for a couple of years. It’s OK but you can spend a lot of time trying to reconcile the bank account when really it’s a piffling problem that has no bearing on anything of consequence. For example, HMRC paid us two months refund in one payment. The system had a bit on of a meltdown over that and so did my brain as I tried to Wade through the bowels of the system to sort it out. So that’s a job for the nice lady at the accountants. Cash sales are pretty laborious to deal with as well and we have never found a quick solution to inputting the data from the farm buying group mega invoice that can contain maybe 300 items from a dozen different suppliers. Contra accounts a bit clunky as well, having to remember to split the entry, change VAT to purchase instead of sales and put the amount in as a negative figure so “frigging” the system into getting it right rather than it being intuitive.
If I was more disciplined and not so lazy I think my excel spreadsheet would have sufficed really along with bridging software.
Overall though quick books isn’t bad as bog standard cloud based software. You have the data back up for one thing. It does s reasonable job considering it has to be all things to many different businesses. Reasonably satisfied with it but not blown away and think it could screw up mightily if you weren’t fairy accounts savvy. Struggle to believe a painter and decorator could run his accounts and generate everything he needs to do a tax return all from his phone while hanging wallpaper as you see in the ads.

I have swerved going down the digital route until now, just use a spreadsheet and number the invoices to tie in but I need to bite the bullet now. So can anyone point me in the direction of/give me an idiot's guide? Software recommendations? Will my January VAT return need to be digital or can I buy myself some more time to get organised?

Any help appreciated!
