There are many breeds you can sex at day old.
I would like too say you can sex any day old chick you just have to know how!
Many years ago it was young lasses from the far east that were best at "Vent" sexing.a finger placed in the right place would expose the ending of the oviduct if it has one!
These days there are breeds that can be sexed at day old by the different length of the primary and secondary feathers on the wings this I understand is only possible at day old. Dont ask me which way cos I always state the wrong way. But lets say the if they are the same length they are coxs different length pullets. Knowledgable people Please correct?

My understanding was that male chicks could not be shredded live which if true has to be a steop forward in animal welfare, who would be happy with a live lamb being shredded alive. Now I may very well be wrong, it was just something I picked up on the news earlier and if wrong happy to be corrected.

I didn't know that. But an obvious one is sex linked colour. Males and females are a different colour at hatching.

Feather sexing is another way.
Dad worked for a large hatchary when he left school near Blackpool, he learnt how to vent sex there, never had any cocks show up in his pulits, I should of learnt it from him.... wish I'd if paid more attention

There used to be a thriving community of Koreans in Diss Norfolk who specialised in chick sexing. I thought it was all done on colour today
In Broilers where there is a need to seperate for size oriented markets. Ross which are all white can be sexed by feathers Today's Cobb (again all white)are not able to be sexed by feather and are usually placed A/H (as hatched)

it's the bit that says ' start, but doesn't go far enough', that gets me, what more can you do ? I don't think the general public even realise this happens, I suspect they think these are the ones we eat, what would they say, if it was commonly known, that broiler birds are killed from 4 to 6 weeks, so they can still buy 3 for £10.
I thought that regular castration of pigs was outdated, genetic progress ensuring they finish before boar taint, having cut 1000's of pigs years ago, I do have a modicum of sympathy for that one'
force feeding of poultry for foi gras, again, do the public know ? Not something we would buy, but probably marketed as 'grass fed'. And, of course, same things could be said for cattle dehorning, castration, and tail docking, castration in sheep etc, although there are protocols for them.
But it is all part of life, and a large number of reasonably well off families, throughout the world, have started to look at what they eat, and are thinking 'ethical', climate, carbon etc. Our beef industry is worried about the ban on euthanising dairy bulls here, first step ? With chickens, the answer is simple, s/mkts will boast, they have stopped the practice, and processors will simply import chicks from countries that continue to do so. Quite how this all fits in with, we have to reduce our carbon footprint, baffles me, as the call is, reduce animal carbon output, but still want to land us with increasing numbers of useless animals !
But the problem, is education, kids going through schools, are not taught about where food comes from, so as they get older, the shock tactics find a ready market, in veg/vegan movement. How we can alter that, I don't know.
But that is where it has start.

Thinking about it, my friend in the broiler trade has his sexed and kept seperately for sale too different markets, but I must confess I have not seen any difference in colours.
will see him tomorrow and ask about it
