divided we fall ....... never truer than in uk agriculture
Never a truer word spoken !! Just look at the dyfunctional state of the milk job with the favoured few on " premium contracts " while the rest bring up the rear on so called non alighned contracts .
No farmer is big enough to gain the benefits that a well run buying group or dare i say it CO- OP ?? can for its members .
Anyway no supplier is going to give stuff away but nothing wrong with forcing a few efficencies on them by clubbing together:):):)
The IFA grain commitee used to always publish the price comparisons for all the major chemicals on a regional basis and while no suppliers were named farmers could join the dots and know who was selling cheapest .
Without farmers provoiding the grain commitee with the best quotes the could get it wouldnt work .
Knowledge is power and wouldnt a tenner soon become a hundred with a little of it .

Bit like Easyjet-there are only so many rock bottom prices to offer before the suppliers wheels fall off. Buying groups, irrespective of what they say, will never be given the lowest price. Groups like Fram, Woldmarsh etc-the suppliers will have blown their brains out for the sale. Big individual units, with a keen eye and active engagement, can always better them. I reckoned that when I was doing it 15 years ago the centre(bottom) of the £££ market was Stamford/Cambs(I was up North). Had very active people in areas and that area was always that bit cheaper.

Agree that would be nice for everyone to have bottom death price-but thats not how life works-is it? Oh, and always be aware of quality. Remember being given a hot price for azoxy- all turned up in 1 litre cans!!

The whole point here is to drive efficiency (in the supply chain) for the distributors to give a better cost to farmers. This is the reason the group is set at 20, as IBC's come as 20 on a lorry. So 20 come in and then go out the same day, not in dribs and drabs. Distributors always try and offer the best price, but if we can help them with efficiency, we farmers can then get better prices.

It has to be a collaborative effort and this is what Farmdeals aims to do. Working with distributors, not just beating them with a stick.

But they might sell more of the price is right
Good deals for members of our group, that’s a members advantage we like to keep to ourselves !!
Most prices I’ve seen here are in line with what I pay through the group plus they are very good on fert and saved us a tidy sum this year, they do all the legwork and present us with the options 👍🏻

Don't forget when your stuck one day and need something quick, the local guy who was always "too expensive " suddenly becomes very cheap !
That is of course if you haven't driven him out of business with the constant fixation with cheap cheap cheap.

'Dysfunctional state of the milk market'?

I'm not sure I agree. A good few of my former clients were producing a very specific product for a very specific market and had to jump a lot of hurdles to do so, I don't think they would want to see everyone getting the same milk price as them just for chucking it in the same tanker!

The local guy tends to be straight down the line . No secretive prices for exclusive groups that they ain't allowed to disclose as the cream it in somewhere else . The small farmer I expect.
I find the local small guy is often cheaper anyway as he has no overheads .only himself to pay

But he hasn't got the buying power and discounts available to the larger suppliers so its swings and roundabouts.

Buying groups are great if your supplying one but next year you may not be, it can be feast and famine.

I tend to spread my purchases and risk.
Good service is worth something.
