Manhole covers

I’ve got drainage manholes in the yard with the two triangular covers that fit together. The triangles have got pins loosely holding them together. Are these pins necessary for any reason or can I remove them? asking as it is far easier to lift the lids in two separate pieces.

The reason for the bolts/pins is to allow a degree of flex to loosen the covers, while making sure you don't drop one half down into the chamber. Your call if you want to cut the bolts/pins.
