Hi guys,
Manitou 627 E2 - older version, rear engine.
Getting a nasty squeak when retracting the boom, only about the 50% extension point.
1st) is there a way to adjust the front or rear wear pads.
2nd) how the hell do you get to the damn things for replacment/inspection.
Would i have to disconnect pipes, remove pin for ram and slidethe whole boom out? eeek!
thanks. :) J.

you have to remove the boom section from machine.

as said check the steel pipes fro rubbing.

Also if not steel pipes the squeak will not be coming from the wear pads but the support block on the cylinder of the extension ram rubbing the bottom of the boom section, they will do this when the boom isnt shimmed up correctly and sagging down too low at the front so replace bottom wear pad and shim as required, someone may have added too many shims to the top in the past but that would be wrong also as the top pads hardly wear so you always replace the bottom and shim up.

Or the extension ram rod is bent slightly or sagging down too much, could get round the bend if so by taking the pin out and spinning the rod round? but i doubt its bent imo.

These booms are very prone to squeaking though, is it kept well lubricated? I find that an application of oil to the boom even if greased sorts this out.

Reminds me of scratching my head at a loaded dump truck heading up the haul road .I thought it had a load of wood on the back but it turned out be a dipper arm and bucket of a JCB 814 that had shot over the detent stopping it .
Sorry this lockdown is getting at me now...:(

They dont squeak but the support foot ram in side is metal to metal and that does.

Oil and grease are not required on wear pads. Plastic pads already have wax in them for lube.

As ever great advice guys. OK I'll check the 3rd service pipe work first, then go deeper. Our friendly diesel fitter is over on Friday so I'll get his opinion on the job as well.
Thanks ACE, I'll look at the relative packing of the wear pads.
Based on Manitou service agent advice many years ago (20+) I have painted and let dry a thin film of waxoyl on the boom but I see from a previous post this is deemed bad practive now; maybe worth cleaning the boom down as well. But TBH I can see it effecting slip/stick but the squeak sounds like metal on metal.

yeah clean that wax oil off it wont be helping, will tend to rip the pads out as its like an adhesive! JCB love the stuff :X3: :poop:

no one gets in the back and greases them and the rear pads last just the same a the front ones so whats the point!

almost all Manitou and JCB wear pads are made by Nylacast right here in the UK, i have over 40 wear pads on order at the minute from them for Redrock and sanderson! Ordered about 10 or 12 weeks ago but they been shut down due to covid. Bloody paid for them up front too:mad:
