Manitou 728

1997 Manitou 728 lost drive. Not used for about 4 months, was working fine when parked. Engine starts and runs but no drive forward or reverse. Have checked switch operated with hand brake, which works the solenoid. The main solenoid clicks as do both Forward and reverse ones. I have changed the gearbox oil which was thick and milky white in colour and also the filter. Any suggestions as to how to resolve the problem most welcome.

Oil cooler in rad has failed thats why its milky, this long term damaged the clutch packs so wants fixing.

First quick thing to do i spin the filter off and start the machine to see if you got oil at the filter head, if you have oil there spin it back on and double check the electrics.

if you don't have oil there then the pump has failed and its a engine/transmission out and overhaul.

Done the filter check, oil pumping out but milky again despite putting fresh oil in yesterday.
All electrical connections seem ok.

Its going to be milky cause the oil cooler in the bottom of the rad is leaking, when you change the oil and filter there is still a lot of oil left in system in the converter and the cooler and pipe work.

If you have oil pressure at the filter head and 12volts and an earth going to the forward/reverse solenoids and they are energising when in drive and the 4 speed manual gear lever is in gear then there is no reason it shouldn't drive unless there is an internal fault.

You can slip the solenoid coils off and hold a bit of metal in side them to feel the magnets working if you want, if there not working then need to look at the fuse which i think is F8 and then the dump switch wiring on the gearstick, the handbrake switch often has 4 wires, short one pair out and the light on the dash will come on, short the other pair out and the dump relay will click in and it should drive.

Main oil pressure is 15 to 16 bar and clutch pack pressures are 14 to 15 bar.

Thanks again for your help, all checks have brought no positive results.
I think it's time to admit defeat and get someone in as I think you are correct in saying the problem is inside the box, probably the clutch plates.
Do you know if it is possible to repair the radiator/oil cooler?

The coolers are a bugger to repair.
But I know someone in Coventry that will do it, will probably have a whole new cooler in bottom of rad cause repair is difficult.

Alot of places dont even pic up on the leak, they pressure test them cold and there often fine🙄 it's only when they warm up they bloody leak.

I know a man that will do the gearbox if you get it out and on a pallet.

Should have said I think a new radiator is possibly obsolete or very expensive so repair is probably the only option.
