Manitou starting problem ...electrical

I have a '99 MT 728 telehandler. It wont start as it thinks it is in reverse. Shorting the starter out starts it but dont have neutral, only fwd, reverse (where neutral should be on stalk) and reverse again.

I have checked fuses, they are ok, several (i think) relays next to fuses click selecting forward, but not when going to reverse. A likely hint to the problem ? Maybe a relay is burnt and stuck in the reverse position ?

Fiddled with and banged shuttle lever and thats about it !

Is there anything else I should look at ?

ps bloody thing has cured itself now, til the next time its parked in a awkward place or we need it badly

Check the reverse light bulb and associated wiring.

Used to work at a plant hire place and had no end of issues like yours where muppets had reversed into things and shorted reverse light circuit out

plot thickens,

Went to start it today, it started but now wont move back or forward, its as if the dump mode is permantely enabled disengaging drive. Any ideas to any pointers anyone ?

On a matbro that would mean foocked shuttle lever:(

Ok thanks I guess I will try that, thought the selector lever was quite reliable though. If it was this would it cause dump valve to be permantely in as I have no drive in either direction now
