Guys, why does Manitou telehandlers, after year 2011 roughly, have chains on the boom? does it aid with tallying in and out? It must be a successful modification because they stuck with it. JCB uses the usual ram idea

Thanks!

Your talking about big high reach construction machines, dieci use chains for years so have others, it's common on mobile cranes too.

Takes up less room in the booms and there lighter than rams, will be cheaper too.

Manitou only use Chains (as far as I know) on the MT1840 after a total disaster on normal sequencing when first launched in 2008 - booms sections would go out of sequence causing major damage and in some cases were rebuilt and did the same a few weeks later! They lost a lot of customers on those early 1840 and the trade in the know would put them through the auction or export them to be rid.
JCB use chains on the 20 metre and maybe the 18 mtr, Merlo always have been chains on high lift and Bobcat had a similar disaster with high lifts when the machine would rip out the inner tray and shove it out the back all squashed into a piece a quarter of its length.
Manitou since 1999 on all models 9 mtr and above have had problem after problem with hoses stretching and various mod kits to boot - mainly caused by poor sequencing control .
JCB have the best multi stage boom with minimal problems and have been quick to sort out where problems occur.
