'284,000 farmers in India have committed suicide' because of GMOs and Monsanto. Extraordinary claim, someone was berating me at a party the other day with similar figures which I find hard to believe, I know India is a big place, but...

Have read soil not oil by shiva but impossible to back up figures IMO

I am more scared of patent law than any "Frankenstein food" or agrochemical.

Happy to have the option, as long as there's still choice

How this compares with historical figures would tell you more.
I don't know the figures but it may be that modern farming has halved the deaths, (or doubled it )

That's ok, we'll stop trying to produce more food now we've got it to that figure. Oops the population is still growing, we've got to produce more to keep the figure from going up let alone bring it down.

You've got it about-face. The population is so high only because they are able to be fed. If they were not able to be fed they would either not be born or be dead.
Global population has grown so rapidly during the 20th Century BECAUSE agriculture has continually developed to be able to grow vastly increased yields at ever lower relative cost.

Oh the dichotomy of haber Bosch gas nitrogen, the ability to double & sustain populations and the ability to kill them back with TNT!!

IMO poverty and basic healthcare are the main factors in the increasing growth of the population. The poor have more children and improved healthcare keeps more of them alive. However, most of them survive from subsistence farming which has not changed markedly over a long period of time. Modern farming techniques in these countries are mostly used for producing crops for the developed world.

Why is it not a day of protest for GMO's? Monsanto is far from being the only player in the game.It is the same way in this country when people decide to follow the mob, they are very proud of ''what they think they know''! Monsanto is the monster they portray as the cause for all the troubles of the food and health system. They can march with signs and beat there drums so the beast will die. They will sleep well with the knowledge that THEY improved the world for mankind.

Yes indeed. What did THEY do today to feed the world? Nothing, that's what.

Precisley, these people are all experts at telling others how to live and what to do, but they have done nothing to help feed the world.
Their attitude is the same as Stalin when he imposed the collective farms in the Ukraine in the 30s with the result that millions died from starvation. Round them up and dump them on an island and see how they feed themselves with their eco friendly methods, they need a reality check.

Would Monsanto's record in the 3rd world be much different than DuPont or any of the other major players in the Ag. world?
Of course not and it is entirely up to the farmer whether they consider their products to be worthy of use. It is a purely business decision by the farmer and has pros and cons just like any other business decision they take. Farmers always know that not every crop in every year will even cover their costs, which is why most farmers grow several crop types and several varieties of those crops every year. We farmers are not only at the mercy of the market but also at the mercy of the weather, pestilence, the market and politics. Monsanto or any individual crop breeder is the very least of our worries.

true but you can only make that chose if your are given the true facts , and if you r mind is open to see , many farmers have their head in the sand on any thing that might decrease tonnes per ha , and they say their goal is to feed the world, crap . i am not for ogm , not against it , but against companies that cover up the facts , and get government protection to do so
