Margin per cow

what relation has MOPF got to actual profit? noooooooooooooooooone.

It's not something I would ever look at but to be fair if you're AYR calving and fully housed then it is probably is a factor that influences profit so it something that is worth measuring and monitoring.

Every system has different perimeters they can measure, i doubt these guys have much interest in AFC, weekly growth rates or how many cows they can calve in 21 or 42 days.

So the better mopf goes towards the extra payment for the robot, I honestly think difference between 1st cut and 2nd cut is 8k a month. Last yea pr July was awful we just couldn't get our second cut off! I remember it was a nightmare!
That's a hell of a difference. Why do you think that the silage is so bad. Fair enough weather but what other factors? Ideas to improve it?

Ye going to try get it earlier this year, dads always went for bulk with the second cut cos it's always went to Youngstock, but with more cows now we always need second cut for a couple months for the cows. Anytime after 5 weeks we will do a portion of second cut for cows and leave the rest for Youngstock. Year after year it's that kind of financial difference, last year when we were not feeding blend with first cut when we shifted to second cut the cows totally crashed and had to start feeding 6/7k worth of blend to get them back to where they were with no blend. @lazy farmer I really don't know where ur coming from, if we don't get a margin over feed we don't make money simple as that, what guidelines do u go by regarding profit?

18,7 ppl
172£/cow/month
Yield is about 30 liters/cow/Day.
Only calculating feed cost for milkers.
My feed to milk ratio is too low atm, and yield is also down. Looking forward to building crew to go away and leave my cows at peace.
How does one achieve 27ppl?
I sell to Arla and they paid about 31 ppl in march, going down 1 ppl for april.

That because it margin over cake/meal/blend and not all feed costs.

on what average milk price was your MOPF of 18.7ppl calculated on?

Is that all cake/meal/blend or just for milkers?
Some have heifers and some don't.
We always calculate all feed cost, as it's not for free just because we grow it ourselves.
It would be all cake/meal/blend fed to dairy cows in milknow or dry. Not youngsters.

I calculate with feed rep to keep track of rolling avg yield and rolling feed cost per litre. Other wise don't pay attention to it, preferring to use comparative farm profit data

So your milking cow feed costs are 13.3ppl?!!

Yikes!

Yes, for all feed, not just purchased feed.

What do you consider a reasonable amount? And how do you price your homegrown feed?

My cows eat about 23 kg DM/day. My margin is about £ 5,8 cow/day for milkers.
Margin cow/day is the number i'm concerned about. I don't care if i can lower my feed price to 5 ppl if my margin cow/day goes down.

Resurrecting this as spent a whole day yesterday in two meetings going over figures. And what was the main outcome, silage is letting me down big time. Same old man believes in bulk. Anyway the pit or go to do bales only argument will wait for a month or two yet. In the meantime @supercow i remember you saying you use Davidson’s, what all do you use going to price a 18% parlour cake off them against Carr’s ( Buttergold 18 circa 234) also bagged calf pellets and dry cow rolls.

Our cake is 18% at 210£ I think from
NWF, blend 21% at 233£ With davidsons. Il be honest, I don't go around looking for the best price, which I know a lot of you will advise to do. I find a feed company or 2 that I trust, or trust more than the others. I am not a nutritionist and almost lay the fate of my cows in their hands, in terms of nutrition. What I do do is monitor yield every day of my life and monitor condition and fertility. All these things are good at the minute although our feed bill is high at 9.5 pence roughly, I am fairly happy with cow performance.
If we didn't have the first cut bulk of last year, end of may it was brought in, we'd be buying silage right now. And a question I sometimes ask is, get rocket fuel for 2/3 cuts and run out in march/April and start buying in variable silages or grow more bulk and less quality...

Your in the exact same position as me silage wise and it should count for something having plenty just sold 70 bales aswell. Had that bad load of blend in January so still stepping parlour cake down which by next months visit should be nearer 9 pence as opposed 10 pence. If I could shave £20/30 of parlour cake it’d squeeze that bit more. 12 me silage and maize land I’d be £££
