Marker for black sheep

hi stupid question, my son has some black sheep (I know don’t ask!)
He has tried red and yellow but only lasts a week before fading to not visible
Can you get white marker, quick search online says no.
What do other shepherds use.

If they have horns, wax marker or tail tape on them.

If not, spray yellow on the back of the head. Less rubbing, less fleece.

I use memory, but then I've only one black sheep at the moment.

Bright orange works. If yours is fading, it's the make of marker and/or the method of application rather than the colour of the sheep.

Blue just disappears into the black wool, so will... black


Red, Yellow and white probably best colours

Bigger, bolder ear tags with larger more legible numbers.

I have a few blacks and find yellow or red works best. mark them on there back rather than the side.

....having said that interestingly their Flukiver is a good bit cheaper that what i can get locally......

A few dark sheep are very handy on the flock - easier to spot in the snow, for one thing.

Yeah , those prices are ex vat I see now

Where did you get that from as a matter of interest?

Mvf is 92.60 ..5l ex vat atm

But would you want a flock of black ones? The most effective way to learn is by making mistakes. You can tell kids, and sometimes they'll listen, but the most effective way to learn is by letting them make mistakes. Then stage events so they learn how much easier it is to do it the right way!

Our scanner man handed me the ritchey orange can when our black ones were coming through, and he should know.

I use Net-tex Promark spray on my blacks, it actually stays on for more than a few weeks, compared with most other sprays (incl those Ritchey ones)
Yellow, Orange, Green, Purple, White (I find red not so good, and blue works but also fades)

or for longer lasting marks.... Black wool has more value as fertiliser than fiber anyway
