Market for 9 month B&W barley bulls.

Location
Wales
I have 52 B&W barley bulls currently 4-5 month old on ad lib crimped barley, bicarb, minerals and highpro molasses. Bought them as had 70 tonnes o crimp in clamp needed using. Would prefer to get then off farm by 9 months for further finishing by someone else. Is there a market or am I better off finishing them myself?

Always a market for anything but if anybody else is going to make profit on them in theory you should make more, unless of course you are buying straw

There's less demand now for black and white bulls, but there is still a market for them, plenty of people around me put 4 or 5 in to Thirsk Fat every week. I don't see many in the store markets nowadays, If you keep them till 9 month old you've done the hard work getting them there you might as well finish them, not sure where you'd send them though around you.

Like @casper74 said, you’ve done the hard bit. You won’t make bugger all profit at that point selling them to further feeding. You’ll do much better carrying on straight through with them too 12 months. Then start cashing them as they come ready. If you’ve the gear too feed them. Carry on. 👍 feeding bulls is easy really. Ad-lib barley based ration and straw. Small amount of silage/haylage too keep digestion good. As you say you just need too watch the aggression and a tendency to destroy things. But you can work round that I’m sure!

Probably safer bet to bite the bullet and get them finished then 👍. Not too much hassle buying in an artic load of barley if mine runs out i guess.

Touch wood iv found (When we did black and white bulls) so long as they were reared from calves they diddnt get aggressive so long as they were gone under 17 month.
Take them to a max 14 month and sell fat.

We only do ~120 a year. All from milk calves too fat at 12-14 month. We’ll get 3/4 that get stroppy at about 10 month. They don’t last much past the 12 month line! Every couple of years we get one that goes loopy. Had one the other week, had too split the bunch as he tried doing 3 others in. Sent the whole batch at once, 9 were O+2 upwards and 310-345kg dead. The pillock was 272kg and O1. So he was a total kn!b and didn’t even pay!

I know its a ‘how long is a piece of string question re type, breed, start in life etc’ but what’s the earliest age you have shifted them at? Mine are about 200kg at 4.5 month old average, majority are decent sorts that have had a good start by professional rearer (all vaccines etc).

You can shift onto the Rose Veal job from 9 months I think? I go for straight red meat so as long as they are 12 months they can go. Get some right nice fresian bulls I can be waiting for them too be old enough too go. 12 months 1 day is pretty usual.
The Halal outfit (all stunned) I used to supply would take them from 9 months onwards as long as the shape was there. They were brilliant for 3/4 bred beef bulls at 11 months just before they have that next growth spurt. Unfortunately he retired! 😢

Had thought around April, trying to gauge how long 70 tonnes of crimp will last them.

I was told that a Barley bull to 12 months eats 2 ton of barley IIRC

Your more than half way there but of course the bigger they are the more they eat .

I would say 70 tonnes of dry barley would finish them...but crimp. Might have to add some DM to get you though?
