Marshall v Bailey trailers

Marshall are the wish.com of trailers. I'd walk past a Marshall to get to pretty much any other manufacturer, and I say that as someone who has had a few from them.

The Bailey will hold its value far longer, and it won't have been painted by monkeys. Broughan, Stewart, Western, KTwo, Bailey, they're all in a different league to Marshall.

Have a good look at the welds under the trailer, I've seen welding that looks like it was done by a blind toddler with vitus dance they are using thinner steel than they used to too.

I think the Marshall paint is better than Baileys now. Marshall does seem to scrimp on other finishing items though - lights, hoses etc.

They were always 'made to a price', but now compared to everything else they are just cheap.
The slide started about the time they went to red and purple paint, and those god awful laser cut ladders.
As a brand they're like something from East Germany in the early 80's.

@whindy how much is a 16t trailer these days?

That's an unfair statement. They're nothing like poor quality. They're no Stewart or Redrock maybe, but they're a good standard. We run a QM1200 and got a tour of the factory just over a year ago including their brand new multi-million pound painting facilities. The boys that run the company couldn't be more outgoing and open eared as well. They're trying hard to fix any previous poor reputation. Marshall are to be fair the standard for trailers, you won't go far wrong with them now.

In addition you'd be a lot harder pressed to put a Marshall on their side. Bailey have a reputation for being unstable and you look at their floor height in comparison with others and it's no surprise. You can tell they're made in a flat area of the country.

They did go through a bad patch then, but since they got the DOE franchise when Marston went under they have got a lot better. New generation running it now as well.

Marshall's mudguards look rediculous

I'd get a Richard Western

Pulled a newish Marshall for the day last year on silage, was told not to scratch it as was being traded for an Irish brand.
Found it was long and low,had to noticeably make more of an effort to swing out wider to turn in gateways if that makes sence?
allmost as though the wheels were to far back.
If it was my money it would be a western or Smyth.

Is there a 3rd option?
I've no experience of Bailey beyond seeing one on the road, they're not that common over here, but the height of them would put me off. They can't be stable with the body sitting so high.
Personal experience would rule out the Marshall. I do wonder if they have more than one factory though and if different trailers are made in different places by different people who have different ideas about what's acceptable.

Marshall axles are very far back. Run Bailey and they are ok paint let them down a bit and silage sides aren’t the best bit thin. but newer ones look better. Bailey will hold its money well. Ktwo is a smart stable trailer and fantastic paint job.

Got one of each. Would say Bailey is over thought of by most on here & Marshall gets an unfair kicking.

Yes if you bought a basic Marshall 10 years ago on 15.3 tyres you have had to fix a lot of punctures and have not much paint left but specced up correctky they are now a very good trailer.

My Bailey of same vintage came with a slight twist. Hit front stop on one side before the other. Brakes are very sharp when empty requiring constant fiddling with. Rear lights are on very flimsy brackets welded to chassis & very exposed to getting bent. Marshall’s are built in up out the way into chassis.
