Mass building by Labour Gov

Dear Farmers et al,

Im not a farmer but I do have friends and family in farming. Despite the large amounts of money offered to farmers for their land to build on, could I please urge you guys not to sell up. I know it’s the most tempting thing in the world to pass up on what’s being offered but our countryside is being demolished and concreted over by toy towns and new build houses which are just awful. You guys are the guardians of our beautiful country and I’d hate to see the UK as “a city state” with only national parks and AONBs as our greenery. Also, an unrelated point- ever thought of playing the supermarkets at their own game? Why don’t all UK farmers join together as a cooperative and set your prices on them? I’d still buy British produce, same as I’ve always done.

Grouping together to buy farms/land is great idea, thank you. No, not a joke. New build homes are notoriously poor quality builds. Ever noticed they put them up so fast? I’d far rather have a Victorian Terrace
With single brick walls, no wall cavity for insulation. I could go on but little point. Living as i do in a stone house built in 1850 with fireplaces and chimneys in every room it was different world. Maybe move on??! My house should be demolished and replaced with a modern house but as the UK domestic wealth is in bricks, stone and mortar that I cannot afford to do. And that is why new builds are required. Green or Grey belt or no.

People need houses to be built for them to live in.
The more that are built the better.

You need to look at it from this side of the fence if most of us were given the opportunity to be set up from a golden handshake regardless of the gov and policy
( providing it didn't all go back to them in CGT🙄) you'd snap their hand off and move far away from it all and chill !

But I think on labours planning and housing talk you might be taking there rehtoric on this policy a bit to literally ,

They say green belt is going to be built on but technically it's the stuff that you would probably not even think was green belt looking on the map ,
can live in hope I suppose cos there is some here that needs some bricks and mortar all over it .....

While the population is growing and older housing stock is of very poor energy inefficient design we cannot avoid the need for new homes … unless you are happy for people to sleep on the streets.

Even though I’m not a farmer I do own a few hectares in France and England for my polo ponies. I have continuously refused purchase offers for this very point. This point is bigger than ourselves to make a few quid. So if we all sell up then what does the uk do? Rely on external countries like Ukraine to provide our agricultural needs?

Not building many more of those though. It's more than you basically just told a fair chunk of the population their houses are shite, which, if you wanted to do the below, is not a good start.

Groups of folk buying farms is a good idea of you want to retain the character. There are two blocks for sale near here that are swamping social media grumbling they will get built on. Reality is that if 300ac is £3m then it doesn't take an overly large investment from a large village of 1000 people to get it bought. And you all get a nice dog walk and bit of IHT relief.

Stop people having 2 homes to free up properties especially in coastal areas like Devon and Cornwall.
How would this be done?
Double CT on second homes?
Are they half at the moment?

How would second home owners avoid paying?
Land registry wouldn't necessarily ID owner occupiers because houses can be registered in any number of ways? Spouses, cousins, etc/

Would Work and Pensions help?
Anyone on benefits registered to a place?
Anyone paying PAYE registered to a place?
Anyone in receipt of a pension?

seems like Big State and more expense

There will be gov departments who could spaff millions on hunting out largely vacant holiday homes in dormitory ghost towns in picturesque regions.

Hmmm...

And no I don't have any property other tha the share I currently live in.

The truth is though they are sh1te. Most local builders I know wouldn’t put their name to them. A local family of brickies near me walked off the site in our local town said they wouldn’t put their name to it.
