Thinking of buying a 17yo 4260 and am a mechanical KFA. Anything I should watch out for? Any comments from people who have one? Thanks

Yes most likely, I didn’t click what it stood for. Our 4260 had a problem with oil wetting the back end casting out of the top link sensing spring I believe, after 10 minutes of running it was wet thro. It got returned to the dealer and traded up.

The gearbox is crap! Stupid long gearstick feels like a stick of rhubarb in a bowl of custard.

We got one new in 1999 and still have it, but afaik the model didn’t last long before it became the 43xx series.

You've all suprised me I thought the h-m-l spring issue ironed out by the time the 4200 series came out. Our early 390t had that problem, but they upgraded the spring on the newer n reg one.

Is the tractor your looking at a manual or Power shuttle?

Definitely not as I had a brand new 4245 on a R reg and that one had the spring break within a couple of years

spring isn't that big of an issue anymore, its less than a days work and most should have been upgraded.

power shuttle from what im told is u just need to remember to leave it in neutral when parked as it is cooled by an oil feed from the back of the gearbox, if u leave the 1-4 in neutral the shuttle part isn't cooled. remember the gearbox housing is the same as the 12/12 in the 399, just more added into the same casing. nice enough tractor to drive

We have a 4355 (basicly the same)
Plenty of power and plenty of gears. lift capacity good with two assistor rams. Auxiliary hydraulics are quick, and exceptionally fast when you combine the flow.

Problems?
Blocked filter lights just a few weeks after early servicing. Seemed to Settle down after 300 hours. (was something to do with brake linings bedding in so won't be an issue)
Had a few problems with the Power shuttle Had to have a new lever assembly (under warranty), and a new ecu/brain fitted last year.
Plastic thermostat housing started leaking and had to have a new one.
New bearings in the hydraulic pump drive assembly.
And a couple of pickup hitch cables (they're a bit light duty tbh)

a friend has a 24/24 4270, I like it, but prefer my 399 with the 3 sticks, it needs a bit of work but I just like it it seems right. not push on the electric shuttle on the 4270 but it wouldn't put me off

We had a 4270 with powershuttle, they are an ok tractor but they are not as strong or as heavy built as an mf 6270 of the same era. If you want a tractor for an all rounder they do the job, we had to replace the powershuttle computer on the one we had from what hear its a common fault. They are ok but the Coventry driveline is fairly primitive by todays standards if its your front line tractor.

Got it on demo today, never a truer word said - I was lost, drowning in custard land for while. Think I am getting the idea now

It is a straightforward 1234 gearbox, if its a 12x12 or 24x24, but with an unusual three ranges that are changed in the 5/6 plane when compared to a car with a six speed box. If in on of the two lower ranges then pushing forward to where you would expect fifth to be and back to neutral changes up the range. If in low range, doing so once takes you to medium range and twice to high range. Pulling back to where you would expect sixth to be on a car will change up a range at a time.

Changes may be vague if bushings at the base of the lever are worn. Easy to swap bushings though.

I should mention that I dislike this gearbox in 40kph configuration. For road work I prefer the non-shuttle 18x6 box if its a 40kph one. However, lots of farmers do seem to like the 4200 and 4300 tractors, so maybe I'm in the minority.
