Massey 590 drivetrain 4wd question?

You have a shaft out of the gearbox-transfer box under the clutch/cab and shaft out of the diff axle
there should be a shaft that goes between these shafts with the same splines/teeth on then there should be two couplings about 7'' long with the same splines inside you slide these on the middle long shaft one at each end then with shaft in place slide the couplings one forward and one back to overlap each end shaft and the long middle one then as above there should be a hole in the middle of both couplings to put a split pin or nail threw and bend over so the coupling can move a little backwards and forwards but the nail pin stops them moving of the shafts as the nail pin comes against the ends of the shafts

The splines don't look much different to new, is that the collar to the right ?

I believe so, but its my guessing the collar has slid forward (or been slid forward towards the front axle) and hasn't been connected for a while as the splines are dry and covered in brown dry rusty stuff no grease etc my guess and its just guess is the 4wd is seized and the prop shaft was taken off to make it easier to drive. Whether this happened before it was purchased i couldn't say.

4wd very unlikely to be seized

What about the knob? If its the one i am thinking of it doesn't looked like its moved for a while.

Will get pictures.
If the 4wd drive was seized the whole tractor would not move, if the front diff was damaged it is difficult to see how pulling back the coupler would help.
More likely it sliped back of its own accord and was left like that.
How many hours on the tractor?

Hours good question the rev counter is dead and seems the hour meter stopped long ago.... but will check i might take a pin down and see if it slips back on, the thrust bearing was replaced not so long ago so would have expected it to have been refitted then unless it was and the pin fell out recently? if the 4wd was not engaged the splines would move by hand with engine off? 4wd engaged splines wont move?

If they are like the 3000 range they need oil pressure to be in 2wd but I don't know how that range work.
One way is to slide coupling into place and drive round yard putting knob in and out (I'm laughing as I type) you will feel 4wd clunk in and out.
Steering lock is greatly affected by 4wd being in.

not like 3000 series. need pressure to engage on 500 series.

yes 4wd off or engine stopped splined shaft coming out of rear drop box should turn by hand. engine running and 4wd engaged splined shouldn't turn by hand. spline coming out of front step up box should turn a bit either way due to back lash. either way you if its an early model you will only ever have 3 wheel drive as they didn't have diff lock on the early front axles
