Got a 1998 massey 6190 , standard hydraulics , when she's warm steering gets stiff at low revs ,which I thought just needs new pump , but it started not holding in dynashift B in autumn but now it seems to jump from a straight to d going up gears but does sometimes seem to select them on way back down , is this linked to steering been stiff ? Anyone had similar problems

TIA

While I've not had your exact symptoms I can say that the 6100 series is very sensitive to oil and filters. I'd start by changing both filters (genuine Massey filters are competitive and still available), cleaning the suction screen (behind a large hex head plug on the bottom right??? of the tractor) and refilling with the correct oil. Then get it nice and hot and bleed it (schrader valve also on the right??? (I think) about halfway along the side of the tractor). Be prepared for either a lot of air or high pressure hot oil to come out. Hold the valve down for several seconds as you can get air after the initial spurt of oil. A face shield isn't a bad idea when doing this.

This made a massive difference to ours (6170). I can't promise it will help yours and it could be a pump or pressure relief valve problem but if it hasn't been fully serviced recently I'd start with that.

Sticking in D is a protection mechanism when the hydraulic pressure is low. The D pack is held on by a spring and off by hydraulics whereas the A-C packs are held off by a spring and on by hydraulics. Consequently if there is weak pressure A-C can slip and wear but D won't so it locks into D. This can also be caused by a corroded connection (typically under the cab on the right hand side near the main computer or the small wire running to the battery). However the fact the steering is also heavy suggests a physical issue rather than electrical.

Full service with new massey filters and oil was first thing we did in autumn when we got it , did the auction screen at a later date when I finally managed to find it . ..

Think I best try bleeding the system on that valve , I initially thought a pump and was on the points of getting one ordered to fit it but someone mentioned am I sure it's that so doubted myself ...
Thinking of getting a mechanic out to flow and pressure test it to confirm it to be a pump weakness and not am internal leak somewhere
