Massey 6480 spool slice

I need a new spool slice for my teir2 6480, standard open center hydraulics. Its the middle spool, no float.
It broke last year, at the time a new slice was £450 now they want almost £750! Saying the part has changed.

Can a slice ever be fixed? Anyone know where i can get a cheaper part?

Take the opportunity to fit a slice with float instead of that cheap shite three position slice that isn't actually cheap. You may well find that its price hasn't changed and could even be cheaper than the original type.
You won't know unless you ask.

Apart from working with single and double acting rams, the four position obviously has detents and float, plus I believe it a zero leak type. Ordinarily, unless it was specifically ordered differently from the factory, these tractors only have one zero-leak type which is the four position one, but do check. Changing a slice to four position, so you have two identical, is especially useful if you have a fertiliser spreader with twin disks that uses individual spools to hold their respective sides shut. Also with two identical spool levers next to each other, you can open and shut both sides together [or separately].

It stopped working last year on the baler. Lever moves but nothing happens. I had a hell of a job getting it to release the hose.

I need to go have another look at it to refresh my memory.

Mechanic had a quick look at it last year but came to the conclusion its needs a new slice.

You should take the small cover off the back of the slice, the one held on with two allen key bolts. Inside there the water gets in and cannot get out so if it's a jumbled mass of rust and knackered springs it'll cost you about 700 quid. MF say it's non servicable. I had exactly the same problem with my 7480, it would not let the pressure off, then would only work one way. Took it all to bits took out the knackered rusty crap and used it sparingly until the tractor went elsewhere. Tip for the future, take off those covers every now and again and fill with grease. £700 is just a con. Had it a very long time ago on my JD6600, exactly the same problem with water ingress, the dealer drilled in some grease nipples....and you could get parts for the JD!

You can now get the complete detent from massey or go to a new holland dealer as a TM has the same spool valve

Massey dealers have been next to useless! List in NH dealer is only £130, should be a chunk of discount in there too.

What does that get you? I have a TM here that had the jumbled mess of rust and broken springs. Now just a void and very careful manual centreing of spool needed.

How do you remove the detent part on the back without turning the rod running through the spool in the block. I looked at ours middle of last year as it wouldn’t hold positions, took the back cover off cleaned it out and ended up turning the rod which in turn unseated the non return valve/check valve (unknowingly to me) lifted baler back door and obviously couldn’t lower it. Had a fight trying to get the pipe in another spool to lower it. Also took some working out what had happened!!

Just beware anyone who does try to change the detent to (i assume) hold the rod at the front so it can’t twist in the block while undoing the Allen key bolt on the back. Any movement on the rod and it knackers the check valve and won’t let oil return back in on the positive line.
