Massey Ferguson 135 rear hydraulic trouble

Hello,

I have an MF 135, not sure year, but I believe 70's.

There is a single outlet for one hydraulic hose, I have attached a tipper trailer to this and used the levers on the side to raise and lower the tipper. After a few times, the single hose went under pressure and then I heard a pop come from inside the tractor and since that time the tipper won't tip.

The arms still go up and down, but if I put pressure on them then they lower and also if I attach anything to the arms they won't take any weight.

I am now wondering if this single hose system had something else as part of it earlier, because on a single hose system there does not seem to be any return or valve that would release pressure so it sounds like I need to take the system apart and fix something internally in the hydraulics. There does not seem to be any diverter valve fitted.

If anyone has nay ideas, that would be great. Or any direction as to what to do.

Taking pressure from there to tip a trailer doesn't need a return valve as it releases when you put the levers down. If you heard a pop check the 4 nuts on the studs holding the cylinder. They are the 4 large ones seen on your photo. One or more may have sheared off.

Ok that’s good to know. Tks. I checked the 4 nuts and all seemed tight and good. I was hoping it wasn’t a valve or something inside the workings.

the pop sound happened at the point the hose went into pressure while the trailer was tipping. Since then it hasn’t worked and now the linkage won’t lift any weight.

Did you replace the oil when the hose went?
The hose didn’t split and no oil was lost. Just somehow the linkage and hydraulics don’t hold pressure after I heard a not very loud pop coming from somewhere.

the hydraulics had not been used for a while, I wondered if more oil isn’t needed but checked the level and it says it’s at max.

Ok. Would the linkage still be able to go up and down if the lift cylinder was split? Just a question.
Yes they will lift their own weight but due to the split in the cylinder they wont lift anything else because oil will leak through the split. And they will drop quickly when the engine is stopped.

Relief valve stuck, jammed, broken ?? I guess you're guna have to remove hydraulic top and take a look inside whatever it is. Don't forget to remove the little roller from the control valve fork though ot it'll drop out when you lift top cover off. It's accessible by removing R/H side cover.

Ok thanks. Definitely sounds like I am in for a bit of a job. Not what I was hoping for but if it keeps the old girl up and running then I guess I have no other choice.

Remove the side plates and have a look inside at the cylinder best you can its under the 4 nuts

Check the stack pipe orings top and bottom too
Thanks for that and good point, yes would be good to see before I take everything apart. When you say the stack pipe, can you tell me what you are referring to. I should probably know but I have yet to repair the hydraulics on this tractor or any tractor as yet, so following guidance from an mechanic friend and the forum.

The stack pipe I think he means is, on the right front corner of the top cover there is a block, under that is a pipe that goes to the bottom of the casing, has an o ring on the top and bottom, very easy to damage the bottom one. Mate had a cylinder go bang on his fergy 4cylinder when the relief valve stuck. was a helluva split in the cylinder when removed.

As col said

When your sat on seat under your right thigh on top cover there's a rectangular cast plate with 2 bolts in
Undo them lift cap plate off
You'll see a pipe sticking up pull it out check orings

Also start it up with that plate off see if you get a good flow of oil should flow a 1" ish on tick over

Then drain a couple of gallon of oil out remove pto selector cover you can run it with out the plate while looking inside at the lift cylinder
