Can anyone tell me the significance of a red "F" riveted to the front grill between the headlights of my 1976 MF 165, it just doesn't seem to be on any others and no info online.
Thanks

So it's centered in the grill with rivet holes and 2 substantial location spikes, 100 % factory fitted in my opinion (I'm an engineer), in Massey red , this tractor is family owned since 1980 in Ireland, no go faster stripes or nonsense, it's a genuine question !

It's aluminium pop rivets drilled through a badge. No way any badge left a factory with drill holes and pop rivets. Would have been mounted from the back of the badge and hammer rivets were still on use more so at that time.

Yep, definitely looks like that, very curious, machined drilled holes for the rivets in the F and grill holes appear pressed, not drilled, now I'm more confused.
But thanks for the info, you hit the nail on the head with the origin of the F, now to establish "why"

Those rivets are mine but they did replace exactly the same so that is still unusual. But solid rivets would not have been used on a perforated grill either as they need solid casing holes in both materials being bound so as deformation only occurs at the back of the rivet
