No problem whatsoever. A 399 should be around 82 hp at the shaft if it has been treated with a bit of respect so should be more than man enough for the baler.

What have you been driving the baler with until now?

What gearbox. I used to drive a mp130 deutz with a 12/12 shuttle 399 and it was grand, nice drive too with left hand shuttle. Not as fast as the 160hp but did the job.

On a side note. It was the 3stick 399 with the older engine that split the gearbox in the baler one day, still the gearstick between ur legs wasn't bad but the spool is too close to the floor. Sor handy working

Thanks looking at a 96 model 399 gear box is 18×18. Is the 12×12 40kpm

id say 18/6 in that tractor. drove a 390t with that box a few times, wasnt one I would pick. not sure about the 40km with the 12/12 ours was 1991 and 30km but the 18/6 is a fast 40km.

A 4270 is a nice tractor too but rare enough

82hp sounds a little on the low side to me. I get that there will be a loss from ~100hp engine to PTO, and also some loss due to age.

Not that i'm qualified in any way to comment, more just an observation/perception.

From my recollection, 6,354 in early was 97hp, later 1006.6 as in after 1991? was 104 or 107.

In saying that our older 399 at the time would have out dragged the newer for pulling in a hill but the newer had more poke if u get me. In a days drawing of grass on a long run our older 399, (I actually sold this tractor when we needed more hp with a deal that I bought it back if he ever wanted to sell it, I bought it back 3 years ago) it would not be one load behind. My brother had to drive it when we bough it and I wouldn't say he hated it but if it went on fire he would have went for diesel not water, he ragged the life out of it and hoped one day it would go bang. It hasn't went bang yet with over 9000hrs and not using a drop of oil and regularly flames out of the exhaust even when just pulling the wrapper up a hill.

The 6,354 really had some low down grunt, it just kept pulling to the bitter end, big difference from the big turbo stuff nowadays which needs changing down and down to keep any realistic power. With the 6 pot perky I remember when the tanker was emptied, you shoved her top gear and off you went.

The 399 is not a clever tractor.. it’s a little 80hp backend pretending to be a 100horse machine capable of competing with other 100horse heavy duty tractors.. work it hard and it falls to bits. Puh is flimsy rubbish, lift capacity is pathetic. Ours wrecked it’s rear wheel bearings and final drives with duals on in just a few months of tree planting. The rear stub axle snapped clean with a dump trailer. Absolutely tiny cross section!
endless problems with front axle with a loader on and a tiny cramped cab with no passenger seat. Very poor bumpy ride too. Too many other problems to list..

As above they are a dated design but most reliable for livestock farms. Little electrics in them and as they are an old design lots of knowledge of how to fix.
There are higher spec tractors but remember massey had a 3000 series at the same time for that market.
