Hi everyone iv found a massey ferguson 698t for sale and going to see it this week. The tractor has been used on feeder wagon previously the tractor has a few problems 1 the pto wont stop when disengaged unless under load second problem is the brakes dont work chap believes the master cylinder has broke. Any advice would be greatfull. Thanks

PTO could be the PTO brake pad, but sounds like warped plates in the clutch pack caused by slippage due to low hydraulic pressure or o ring leakage. Can you turn the PTO shaft by hand with the engine stopped? If not, its likely to be the pack. Quite a major job as tractor has to be split between gearbox and backend. Hydraulic pumps need to come out ( aux pump probably worn out anyway) before you get to the PTO clutch. Tractor needs hyd pressure and flow testing before its pulled apart. Brakes are fairly straightforward as master and slave cylinders are all external and as long as it hasnt been abused the brake discs inside the axles should be ok. Really depends on price, hours worked and condition.

Brakes will be an easy fix, slave cylinder corrode and leak. Available from sparex vapormatic and the likes fairly cheap.
If every other hydraulic function works the PTO problem will more than likely in the clutch pack, could be the brake (check that first) or the discs warped. If inside the clutch pack will be more time
Edit I typed this hours ago but it didn't post?
Anyway re read your post, master cylinder failure is rare slave cylinders leaking isn't.

Great tractors, had one in 1985. Pulled like a train. Only 2 issues were, very light on backend, water in back tyres cured it. And because I had very steep ground, if engine stalled for any reason the four-wheel drive let go. So sold for a 3070.

Hope it wasn't a multi power aswell if you're on steep ground 🙈🙈

Apparently all the hydraulics work fine

I'm going to see the tractor friday. So if I can turn the pto by hand with tractor turned off it could be hydraulic pressure or o ring.

With the engine off, the shaft should turn but wont spin freely, if its solid it means the pack needs looking at. Didnt realise it was 4WD, if possible jack up the front under the hard nose so that the front axle can hang. As you lift it, check for wear on the front and rear axle pivots and for wear to the splines on the pinion shaft. Make sure there is oil in the axle housing, very common leakage point. Wear is common on the pivot bushes if left ungreased and wear on the pinion shaft will eventually mean an axle stripdown to replace it. Good luck, hope its a good one.

That’s a 698 with an aftermarket turbo, good tractor in its day but the engine (4.318) hasn’t the best reputation and some parts are now obsolete, the cab looks rotten as a pear to me,sadly they all did this,I wouldn’t like to rely on it in the event of a roll over.

Puts a whole different light on the job, just about any working 698T I would buy tomorrow. A 698 ????? probably not in any condition even more risky with a turbo.

That's not a 698T. As said,a 698 with a turbo fitted. Very different tractor. Wouldn't touch it personally. Had one on loan for a fortnight, terrible gear box, very wide gearing, and high reverse useless. 😔😔

This one has a 5.2litre perkins engine would that be better with the turbo kit
