Massey Ferguson 5455 think fuel issue

Right so i ve a 5455 tier 3 perkins engine. The problem is it keeps either cutting out or when it is running then stuttering not all the time mind! This has been an intermittent problem now for a good year but of course because i want to work it s come back to bite.

What we ve done is remove the tanks and clean all filters changed many times all lines blown and cleaned out right the way through anything that can be taken off and cleaned has been right up to the injector pump, we ve replace the priming pump aswell and had new injector s 18 months ago. originally the tractor ran fine for a day then when i went back the next morning all started again. It s worse when its moving but does it on occasion when stood. Have had the laptop on there are no faults and of course it won t play up when we do attach the laptop so we can see everything is running within the perimeters.

All fuel that came out of the tank is put back into main tank and filtered back into the tractor so it is clean also.

Now when the tractor does stop if you turn the ignition off and back on the tractor will start without priming but you have to switch it of and back on else it won t start.

Whats your guys thoughts

check the two big plugs on side of engine mine wouldn't start about 3 weeks ago there was damp in one of them
tractor was running perfectly came home and stoped it next morning woodent start
was turning over but wasn't getting diesel
spent 4 hours trying to get it sorted

Is it worse when its cold weather? I have a 2009 tier 3 one. It would stutter more when cold until it got warmed up then it seemed ok. Did most of what you have done, changed the fuel pump last year and problem solved!

Has yours got the optional large glass agglomerator to the left side of the engine? If so there is a replaceable pre-filter under the square top that I imagine many operators might be unaware of.

These were standard on the 6400 models for a good while and optional on 5400 tier 3. Without it, there is a chance that water contaminated fuel could overwhelm the capacity of the standard filter bowl unnoticed and possibly flow through to the high pressure pump, common rail and injectors, causing significant and expensive damage.

Is there a stop solenoid on the injector pump?
There is no injector pump. This is a common rail engine that is computer managed using, depending on age, a Caterpillar fuel cooled CPU. Later engines were Sisu and the computers are not cooled and early ones were prone to subsequent overheating and failure of the computer which was mounted rather too close to the engine block. This could cause running and power loss issues on those early Sisu Citius common rail engines.
