Not bad combines really I never been able to get a good a sample as I have from a Massey plenary around being broken for spares cab is pretty noisy wobble box weights used have a habit of breaking and studs on the bottom of the final drive on the cab side other than that just belts and bearings

Cheers only guna be doing 30ac a year with it cos it's hard to find contractors for such small acreage will I still be able to buy new knife sections and finger guards etc for it ?
That will have the French built head on it which may make getting spares not so easy. A bigger issue may be the wobble box if you have any issues. The French heads were metricated but not that many built. It may well be that fingers and sections from another make may fit, if so I would get plenty in.
It is a shame as the 500 series combines were a good machine for their time, 30 acres should only be a long day if you are lucky. Do not forget to back up if you stop when cutting, as the rotary re thrasher very easily blocks if you do not !
keep an eye on the walker blocks and the shaker shoes rubbers if not it will shake it self to bits

The re thrasher on back looks to be on furthest setting back but is still connected does it do more harm than good then?

the setting of the rethresher is not what causes the issue.
The problem comes from straw building up below the rethresher when the combine has stopped in the crop and straw is still passing through. This builds up underneath until it gets picked up by the re thrasher and and binds round it. this obviously clogs it up and you will have a blocked combine before you know it, if you are not careful.
It was a far bigger issue on the older 515 models where the re thrasher is lower.
however as soon as you stop you should always reverse straight away to avoid this danger. It was a bigger issue on the wider models of course.
If the machine is not hydro, you will wish it was in a difficult laid crop.
Never allow anyone to walk behind you !
The rethrasher settings are about giving the straw more beating to remove any last grain left in. too tight and it will break the straw which can return to the walkers. I never came across anyone who used any but the widest settings, if they had ever adjusted them

I paid £2250 bargain?

This is basically the old 500 which derives from the Brantford factory design in the 1950’s.
These were made as 500 in Scotland. When the factory shut manufacture of all European models transferred to France and the bolts and machinings were metricated although I believe all main parts are exactly the same dimensions. It will have the high inertia drum. There are issues in the header if it is French built , but if Bokey is lucky it my have a Dronningborg header. It is also possible that a Dronningborg header may be persauded to fit if things get desperate.
The Dronny header can be instantly recognised by the knife drive which is Pitman on Dronny built .
Fairly certain that no UK MF parts will fit the header
There is much worse news if it is French powerflow MF!

No your right it's the French built header so that's abit disappointing then. there's a big 865 on ebay with 18ft powerflow head but looks like it's been sat a while looks a beast tho shame to see these machines disappear in the scrap yard

Check the 2 brackets bolted to the traction gear box that the belt tensioner is fixed to. Unlike Kilmarnock built machines which had clamping bolts to hold the gearbox after adjustment, the marqette built ones didn't. If these brackets fail the box will jump up bending the gear change cables. I dread to think what replacements would cost of you could get them.

If its got the same design of grain tank auger as a 525 ,dont stop it full ,,my first boss had a 525 and shut it of half way through filling the trailer ,,went to engage it again and the square peg on the bottom of the auger sheared of ,a right pita having to empty the tank though a tiny hole to get at the gear box .
