Massey Ferguson 590 starting probem

I have a Massey Ferguson 590 that turns over for a while before it starts when it is cold. What could this be? Injectors? Or is there a excess fuel button that a don't know about? There is no glowplugs.
Many thanks.

The heater plug is the bit with the wire ,,they often fail

Has it ever had a new starter motor? They do get tired.
Or is it piston / bore wear and low compression? Probably a combination. I find with most of those Perkins engines that if you need the thermostart it probably is low compression. The thermostart will get you round the low compression problem for a good few years though ….. if it’s working.

if its not cranking very fast then thats the first thing you need to address, decent battery, connections and decent starter motor will be enough normally unless in very cold climate then heater plug will help.

Check your battery lead connections and where the lead goes onto the starter, had to do this on my DB this week and discovered the nut holding the lead on the starter needed tightening, don't know were the earth lead attaches on a MF but make sure whatever it's attached to is well fixed to the main frame, DB fixed theirs to the aircleaner bracket which I discovered provides a bad earth if the bolts aren't kept tight holding it to the main frame

Brand new battery and excellent contact! It is only when it is cold it takes a while to start.

Have u tried the flame yet? Our 390 is hard to start durin winter even with the geared starter. Get 2 sheets of newspaper and roll them up like a childs pirate telescope dip the bottom 2 inches in diesel, remove the air filter and light the paper and put it in the air filter box and start her. Works a real treat

Is that procedure in the manual somewhere? A perkins that's not worked overly hard will really benefit from valves and seats being done in the cylinder head. But the 590 is bound to have a heater plug, make sure it's working, or go with the newspaper trick either one should help a lot.

Heat gun into air cleaner would be kinder and less of a fire hazard but if it starts with a lit newspaper then it should roar into life with a working thermostarter as that‘s what it does!

It drips diesel from the leak off pipe onto a hot coil creating a flame for the pistons to intake to increase cylinder temp and help ignite the atomised fuel.

This is the clip I use to try and explain

Whatever you choose to do whether you fit a better starter or try the attempted arson route I strongly recommend either getting the thermostart working if its fitted or fit one if there isn't one. IMO they take a lot of the load of batteries and starters which should prolong their lifetime and save a fair bit of money where as a new thermostart heater you'll get change from a £20 note
