Massey Ferguson 699, Average road speed, MPH?

Hi,
I’ve recently purchased a MF 699 and have been led to believe it’s a French Model??
It’s running 520 70 38 on the rear and 420 70 28 on the front.
It drives lovely and revs to around 26/2700 rpm on the clock, it’s a 3 stick, 12 speed and you can easily pull away in any gear, but it only has a top speed of 14/15 MPH.
Can I ask anyones advise on if this is correct? as always thought they’d do around 20 MPH.
I did hear a rumour that some French stuff was made slower!

Thanks.

Are you sure you are not measuring the speed in nautical miles/hour!
I hope not, because the bloody doors will have rusted of before you’ve gone half a mile!

Your example looks fantastic.
But don’t let it ever get wet!

There will have been several gearing choices, depending on the sales market and the options available in those markets. Plus the gearbox options which might have included the Synchro12, 18x6 speed shift and 12x12 shuttle. There might have been even more options that I’m not aware of.
25kph, 30kph and 40kph would have been available as build options with allowances made for the wheel and tyre options. This looks like being a 25kph tractor. Great for field and yard work but not so good for roading any distance. This was the standard tractor road speed up until the late 1960’s in the UK, after which 30kph or 18.5mph became the standard. There were faster examples of course, such as the TVO DB Cropmaster and Multi-Power versions of MF 100 series with their ‘overdrive’ transmissions. Ford and others chose to make their power-splitters ‘underdrive'

Not sure it should rev more than 2450 no-load.

No 18 spd or shuttle on these, far too early, 12 speed 3 stick or Rabbit power

Thirty years ago i worked on a large farm for harvest. I drove a 12 speed 699 which had been opened up to about 2700 rpm it flew. We also had a couple of two wheel drive 690s which did 2700 rpm and they were dangerous with a ten tonne trailer. We also had a multi-powered 690 which wasn’t very fast but travelled at light speed compared to the 590 multi- power we had.

if its had a gearbox swop out of a 690 or another model with the small redutions on the back axle that will slow it down but it could be a froggy option they did alsorts of strange things
but they only fitted three stick or suicide boxes

Thanks for the information. Is it something that could be modified by a good mechanic, or would we be opening up a can of worms?

I went to Cheffins sale back in May and one sold (attached) for £20140 including buyers commission and plus Vat,

it was in good condition, but nowhere near as tidy as this one, I got it from https://www.oakfields-ag.com/
It has had a total nut and bolt restore inside and out and is like brand new, I paid late teens (plus vat) for it.
