Massey Ferguson diff lock

I have recently bought an old MF (possibly 2135 industrial) but the diff lock is jammed on.

I have removed the pedal housing and freed off the pedal shaft, which was solid. the rod that is pushed in by the pedal was very stiff, but is now freed off.

The splines on the half shaft can be seen through the opening where the pedal housing sits, they are covered in crud. would this be the problem. is there a spring or some other method of disengaging the diff lock as the pedal is not directly linked to it?

I know this is a common fault, but i think they are usually jammed in the off position.

Many thanks in advance for your time.

Since no one has contributed to this yet, here is my tuppence worth!

I bought my MF135 about 30 years ago and the diff lock was seized. I asked my local MF mechanic what I should do. "Hit it with as big hammer", is what he advised. I told him I was frightened to do that as I might break something. "Nah, not a Massey!". Well, it didn't break....but yours might!

On my MF135, I did a similar thing when it was jammed, I just kept Stamping on the pedal and trying to hold it down, eventually it worked!....Well, it didn't break....but yours might! (sorry, I had to use your phrase!)

Abit of grud on splines is normal just clean with brake cleaner and then oil up,
They seize with not being used ie rust keep them lubed.
Any pictures of your tractor etc

Acutally reading your post again it sounds like you have the '65' type axle with the diff lock houseing, and being able to see splines on the half shaft, i would leave the splines as they are if you clean them you run the risk of contaminating your brakes to clean the brakes on this axle type you have to remove the axle ideally.

Try not to lube the diff lock shaft to much with wd ect as it might again get on your brakes

Hope this helps

Well its not a 2135 thats for sure

Im not that familiar with the industrial models but an mf 40 possibly

Inside the axle are the brakes dont get oil on the discs when freeing difflock up

I was told it was a 2135, but did not think it was, will have to watch the brakes as I have been fairly liberal with the oil so far!
Thanks

I thought it could be a 203, but thought the back axle looked different. Google images have not been too helpful, as some machines come up as a 203 but are clearly not!
Photo of bonnet / grill to follow.

Yes that pic looks very similar, but the 35s were called 202 when in industrial mode (I think), but it has the wrong axle from what I can figure out. The front loader looks the exact same, but again I believe they had their own designations along with the back hoe.
It is a nightmare as I want to get the workshop manual, but at the price of them I have to get it right first time!
