Massey Ferguson pressure control coupler

Pressure Control was designed to take weight from a trailed implement or trailer - the chain went around the drawbar of whatever was being towed to transfer.
The principal was a direct copy of DB Traction Control Unit (TCU).

Marvellous thing when used appropriately. There is no need for that little check chain shown in the picture, which stops the links dropping. Just use the minimum pressure needed to hold the links up and increase the pressure to transfer weight when wheelslip becomes excessive. Don't use too much pressure or steering ability may be impaired.

Its important to initially adjust the plates to clamp the lower links properly for the different sizes of lower links found on MF tractors. Also to tighten the sideways external stabiliser chains or fit bars to centralise the links securely.

The chain should ideally not hang vertically down when wrapped around the implement drawbar, but it should slope a bit backwards so that it wraps about a foot or two behind the hook on the coupler. To accomplish this there should be a strong loop welded beneath the implement drawbar to keep the chain in place and the Implement drawbar itself should be strong enough to take the load vertically trying to lift the implement at its mid point. It will not have been designed for this, although it may be strong enough. Or not.

Its an ideal tool to use on a land roller or trailed disc. The second picture probably shows it on a Watson roller but it does hang vertically. Better than nothing but not as effective as it could be.

The ball can jump out of its socket should the implement ever accidentally detach during work. This is to stop the tractor being pulled over backwards and squishing the driver.

So the one in the bottom photo is it older? Or for a bigger tractor?
Mine is the same as the top one
The bottom one is the heavy duty one for the 590 or 595 with the deeper arms , the 699 was 2 wd yes we welded a 4 x 2 channel about 9 inches long under the drawbars plenty of times had the 699 with the front wheels just touching the ground with the N H 719 and 8 ton Fraser trailer .

How did you manage to not wreck the PTO shaft ?

The 719 wasnt a problem as the chain was behind the front bearing on the fixed bit of the diveline the Fraser spreader and baler it was the length of the channel under the drawbar that spread the chain enough to clear the pto shaft that chain on mine is lengthend to get enough clearance

Forgot to put the chain on one morning, 600 yards of wet grassy bank down to 4 acres at the bottom lost it as soon as i went over the top in against the drawbar first one side then the other finished up in top gear and still couldnt catch it did the slalom to the bottom still dont know how it stayed the right way up ..... lesson learned the chain went on when ever it was yoked after that episode.
