Massey Ferguson pressure control coupler

I was watching a dvd the other night, a 135 and I think mf 100 disc, with a bigger blue tractor next to it and the mf literally peed all over the ford
On this DVD they feature a Four wheel drive MF 178 working against a Roadless 75. Pulling the same plough The Roadless 75 didn't show as much wheelslip as The Massey but when pulling the same set of heavy discs they fitted the MF with a pressure control coupler and it ran rings around the Ford.

The fact that the discs were being lifted out of work slightly might have had something to do with it ;)

It was probably best put to use on something like a four wheel trailer with front turntable which was a deadweight to pull.

The Pressure control coupler chain would be looped around the drawbar, for maximum effect (as Cowabunga said) ideally about a foot or two behind the vertical lift point of the coupler arm. The feature worked even better with a full set of front weights on the tractor.

As the lift pressure was increased by the lever operating in the Pressure control sector of the tractor quadrant, so was the downward force on the tractor rear wheels also increased, and hence the grip and pulling power that enabled a two wheel drive MF tractor to pull trailed deadweights so effectively.

Dvd I watched also showed a 4 wheel trailer, blue tractor stopped dead going up steep slope, the mf just carried on

Early Zetor crystals had a traction system that had the same principle but I think they had a hitch that went where the top link went. Saw it in a dealers years ago. Can't remember too much detail but would love to hear if anyone can remember how it worked. Seems suicidal in retrospect.

Pressure Control - Traction Control not only has the effect of adding weight to the rear wheels of the towing tractor it also reduces the loading on the tractor’s front axle and also reduces the loading on the front axle of the towed trailer / implement all of which aid towing ability.

I did an experiment a few years ago using a MF699 4wd with Farm Force double press on heavy, banky ploughed land. Very little weight on the drawbar.
In 4wd, no coupler, it did the job, noticeable slippage going up hill.
In 2wd, no coupler, it just stood and dug its self in to a hole.
In 2wd with the coupler it was as good, if not better than 4wd. Not very scientific I know but I was impressed with the transformation in 2wd.
