gearbox wise i wouldnt worry about either. how ever i would take a good look at the cab roof on both, have a tendancy to rot when i was looking a few years ago, could be 8 years now.

Which Massey Ferguson shuttle is the least troublesome?

Manual shuttle or Electric Power shuttle?

I have the opportunity to purchase two almost identical tractors, one has a Manual 12x12 the other a 24 Power Shuttle, thoughts and advice please...

both are equally as bomb proof as each other if operated correctly. 12x12 is a dry clutch so if you have some heavy loader work etc planned it would be wise to know how to operate it in medium gears etc or you will be fitting a new clutch disc every 12 months. The power shuttle has pretty much remained the same for the last 25+yrs which speaks volumes. If you want comfort and a broader gear range id vote pwr shuttle but if your after something simple and mechanical to maintain id go for the 12x12.

We have a 390t and had a 4355
43 burnt itself out so we upgraded to a dyna 4 5455
The dyna 4 is hell of an upgrade to the 12/12. Ours has done 6700 hrs and never touched the gearbox, all loaded and roadwork.
390t is still a great tractor though.

I had a 4355 with 24x24 power shuttle, loved it, pokey and plenty of gears, it was all good to around 4k hours, when the electrical gremlins started playing up, intermittently it would continue driving upon disengagement of shuttle, got it diagnosed, and after a lot of laptop revisits, had to have a new power shuttle lever. then it started losing drive and throwing up all sorts of error codes and beeps, changed various sensors and selonoids all to no avail, eventually the power shuttle brain behind the dash was changed, that alone was around £1000iirc, and needed to be commissioned/ calibrated by mf software. Sorted it but big bills for diagnosis.
Turn 5k hrs and Started losing high range, so got shut.

We have a 4255 with manual shuttle and a 4270 with power shuttle.
The manual box seems to have smoother gear changes. Sometimes the PS box can be stubborn to select a gear when cold.
The manual box will need clutch adjustments every so often and more regular clutch replacement although this is fairly cheap and easy to do. When the clutch pack goes in PS it is a big job I believe.
The clutch cables can snap occasionally so need to carry a spare there but you can still move it around and move it out the way when this happens. The damper plate failed and left me stranded in the middle of a lane once with the PS box. Not ideal. The damper plate is expensive on these and costs about the same as an entire dry clutch kit with flywheel, cable and bearing carrier.
Overall the power shuttle box is nicer to drive and easier on the knee but the manual shuttle seems more responsive and less delay in direction changes so both have their plus and minus points.
Either way I would much prefer the 4200 series to the 4300. I think the short gear levers are awful personally
