MasseyFerguson Power Steering problems (MF65/203)

Update. Have purchased the correct (i believe) round power steering pump and new pipes/hoses. problem the fittings on the pipes/hoses ars a different size to the threads on the pump!, so thinking about my next step. Are the pipes/hoses incorrect, or is the pump wrong? Do I just buy adaptors to fit the hoses to the pump or do I have to get another set?
Not really had the time to investigate fully, but hopefully this week.

Well after an enforced break I have looked at this again. The fittings are tapered UNF thread and unique to MF! I have managed to cobble some unions together and will see about plumbing it all together tomorrow.
Watch this space!

The problem is, that as bought the reservoir was bypassed, with a flow and return straight to the steering column from the box.

The workshop manual shows this:

Question is; do I need to use the reservoir with the new shape pump, or can I get away with the simpler flow/return set up?

Answers on a postcard please.

Try it with the reservoir attached to the pump 1st dont use the original res if tge work work is alot of faffing about

If the system lacks oil quantity then the other res will have to be used aswell im affraid but it should work with the new setup

Fingers crossed

I dont have a postcard sorry

Great answer, it is what I wanted to hear. Hopefully tomorrow I will be wizzing around the farm taking chicanes with great aplomb!

Well, maybe pottering around a small bend slowly!

I forgive your lack of postcard this time ;-)

Ok, not good. Today topped up the pump ant tried it out, started engine and let it run for a bit then tried steering. Spat the returm pipe straight off, despite two tight jubilee clips.
Question, does anyone know if I have fitted the connections the wrong way round? @REStracTORATION ?

Leave the return pipe off and crank on the starter, see where the oil is coming from?
The direction of oil flow .............
That new pump is for the correct engine side, not for the other side and its spinning in reverse?

Edit:
New pump has no relief valve, that I can see?
The old pump its clear to see screwed into the bottom of the pump unit.

Not sure, I bought it thinking it was the right one, however as it is a replacement for the kidney pump I am not sure I have attached the fittings to the correct holes!

Pipe was probably a bit loose?
But if you crank the engine it will show you direction of oil flow.
So if you leave the return pipe off, you are expecting oil to flow from the pipe into the pump housing, because its the return pipe.
If oil flows out the return fitting on the pump when cranking, its not the return but the pressure outlet.
Does that make sense?

Any pressure relief valve on the new pump, like on the old one?

The pump is completely different to the old one, they are not made anymore. I understand what you mean, just trying to avoid losing any more fluid, will have to get out some see through plastic bottles.
Cheers

the relief valve is internal on that type of pump and i think you have the pipes on the wrong way. from the attached picture you can see the returns pipe (identified by having rubber jubilee clipped pipe in it) is the lower one pointing forwards

Well have removed the pump again and tried to change over the fittings, but no luck. I need parts 9 and 15 from @MF-ANDY 's drawings. Anyone have the part numbers, or even better still the parts?
All on hold until I can get the fittings!
