That time of year for me, couple ewes with mastitis.

Wonder what AB is best, tried alalmycin which works if picked up early, heard Zactran works but expensive.

Use Synulox here. Occasionally saves the quarter (if you catch it soon enough). Always saves the ewe. A lot cheaper than Draxxin (£32 as opposed to £275:eek:)

Crikey, is that what Draxxin costs these days? I only ever had one bottle, years ago.

Tylan (£2.80 for a single 10ml dose) works well here, as does Betamox LA (£2 for a 10ml dose). Never saves a quarter properly, but usually saves the ewe for cull mart later.

Seems like I've had a hell of a lot with mastitis in the last couple of weeks. Eight ewes and two ewe lambs from a flock of around 500, including a couple more NZ Texel daughters, which I was told back in the winter didn't get mastitis.

Hopefully it's down to the weather and there won't be any more....

Zactran has just been granted a sheep licence this week, that would be my 1st choice.

Tylan same family and fine, but NOT long acting and needs 5 daily injections to provide a proper course.

I've found Alamycin/Betamox less than useful.

Always give anti-inflammatory and always mark to cull.

Had a ewe go solid 3 weeks ago, treated with Betamax LA but lambs were old enough to survive so hasn't remembered. Dad thought a ewe had fly strike last night so phoned me to come and catch her, I recognised her straight away. No fly strike but her udder has exploded, treated with fly prevention as a precautionary, she's holding condition well and should be worth something as a cull! If it's deemed to graphic or anything I'll take it down.

On the Tylan, my vet advocated a single, big dose (10ml), rather than a 5 day course. It seems to work well here. I understand the large, single dose is recommended on dairy cows occasionally too.

I'd agree on Alamycin, but find Betamox (used after a suggestion from @_sheptastic (y)) seems to get a good response, if I don't have the Tylan with me. Always with Metacam & a cull mark here.

Legally, now Zactran has been granted a licence for use in sheep, can we still use other drugs like Tylan?:scratchhead:

Legally we have to use a licensed product first, so Zactran, Draxxin or Micotil before we could consider Tylan or Zuprevo.

I was talking to some experts in cattle mastitis and they were very much of the opinion that big doses of Tylan were pretty pointless in any species. The higher dose doesn't get a better bacterial kill and doesn't meaningfully extend its duration of action. There is zero evidence it does any good. I went through a stage of using it that way, but don't any more (as I came to the same conclusion it didn't really work). I suspect you'd get a similar response to a single shot of Tylan at the normal dose. The short course is inappropriate and a recognised risk factor for the development of antibiotic resistance. I'd speak again to your vet and ask for some evidence, because I promise you there isn't any (and if it worked amazingly with a single big shot then they'd do a study and promote it!).

?:scratchhead:

is that tylan 200 ? as there is a 400 on some sites and do you still use anti inflam ?
been using betamox here for one last week (with anti inflam ) has stopped the infection but shes lost the quarter , that heavy rain (stress) after the dry has caused all sorts of issues that were bubbling under i recon , picked up a 6 week old lamb that had lost use of back legs betamox seems to have helped that as well getting about alright this morning but still a bit stiff
