Mastitis problems

Our ambic teat sprayer stopped working in August, we were very busy with other jobs and it wasn't got looked about, scc and clinical cases have dropped a lot since then, they may not be connected but a huge coincidence surely. I wouldn't be brave enough to just stop spraying on my own bat.
Seen a large dairy flushing the lines of teat spray units with hypochlorite dont ask me what it kills that teat dip doesnt.

Good point, our teat spray was made up from 20l drums and diluted with water into the same 200l drum, never crossed my mind that there could be a build up of bugs in the system. But as you say, what could it be that teat spray doesn't kill?
I'm happy enough at present, no new cases since the sprayer stopped and scc has dropped from 250 to 120, plus the saving in product, all adds up to not getting it fixed.

Been drying off low yielding spring calvers with very low scc often wondered if there is even a need for sealer or tube

Why am I not surprised by that ?!

It would be interesting to count up the amount of 'must have' add ons, that have come onto the market, and quietly disappeared, although, to be fair, cluster flush did look a good one, we never noticed any difference when we installed it, nor when it broke.

I always wonder how I’m still allowed to produce milk what with my technology less swing over parlour and simple iodine droppers. Bacto can be an issue but otherwise we just change the liners and have it serviced one a yr. monies hard enough to make as it is with giving it away to hangers on @ £40 an hour including travelling time?

why do you think spr calving herds go that way, everything is simple. No massive silage costs, no straights bills, no massive amounts of slurry to shift, I could keep on, but you get the idea. As an industry, we were talked into going down the yield -high, feeder wagons, straights etc, and how much money have we parted with ? That's before mentioning the money spent on quota !

Dried off a few this morning. Any with a good tight sphincter didn’t get sealer. Bigger probability of introducing dirt with sealer than leaving well alone. Going into nice clean cubicles.

Tight sphincter jokes appreciated.

Not everyone can be spring calving though

Interesting why some farms have trouble with Ecoli and some don’t, it’s not something I’ve seen in over 10 years Dairy farming, do other low yielders not see it either?

Generally mastitis has quietened down here, had a few cases in August but that’s typical here, 3/4s of all the tubes I use will be at that time of year. SCC 86

Probably tempting fate but we wouldn’t have seen one here in 10 years at least if not longer, scc running anywhere between 65-95 most of the year round
