The problem now with lambing is there is no incentive when I lambed a large number of ewes their was the ewe sub to fall back on..it kinda of kept you going when things got you down...that one of the reasons in my area flock numbers are dropping

You are never going to get it right with the unpredictability of uk weather, last 2 years we had grass coming lovely in april, vicious east winds in may swiped it off, wouldn't wanted to have been lambing then, but I think simply you work on averages with normal weather in your area, and what suits you, and stick with it, one bad year and change you will probably catch it the next year, sods law, never chase the trade, your too late, don't change system due to a bad year, your a year too late, think want you want, minimal input, high lamb numbers, finished lambs by a certain month, etc etc, whichever month ticks the most boxes works for you and stick with it, alter a few things over the years to get system to work right for you rather than change and hope month works for you

Having thought about this a bit more it's looking less and less like a good year. We wouldn't need to house and feed the ewes pre lambing but going into the Autumn with all the ewes and all the lambs on farm would mean horrendous over stocking and we'd probably end up having to finish most of the lambs inside (but on a very good trade if like this spring) or sell store.

I was at the local merchants yesterday and was having my usual moan about how sh1t the weather was, how expensive the winter had been and how I'd had enough of the bloody job. She said by the sounds of it there would be a hell of a lot less sheep about next winter and that everyone was saying they'd be lambing later next year. I wonder how many of us will remember this at tupping time?

I have to say this has been one of my best lambing in years , with very few deaths, ewes with plenty of milk ,all going well, and nearly at an end, but still it just doesn't add up financial
