Hi,

We've just bought a Mchale c460 bale chopper/feeder.

We will be feeding bale, clamp silage with it and also bedding straw. Ive used it a couple of times and its a fantastic machine, only complaint is the control box is poorly lit for use in the dark.

I was wandering has anyone successfully fed rolled barley mixed with silage? e.g. one grab on silage, one scoop of barley then another grab of silage. or does the barley just fall to the bottom of the fan?

Thanks
Kevin

Mixing stuff isn't what they do.

It'll successfully blow out just about anything you can dream up to put in it, but it won't be an even distribution of feed.

I've put a leaf or two of straw layered with wet rocket fuel silage in the past which works ok, but not great.

It's definitely the machine that doesn't wear out when handling haylage and silage. Other machines are more straw use biased.

We wanted one machine to Bed,feed silage and be compact in size, so it fits our set up.
we have got a feeder bucket to run along the feed barriers, just thought it may work dropping barley in the machine with silage.
Will give it a try and report back.

Double handling but you could blow it into a pile then reload and might come out the 2nd time reasonably mixed??‍♂️

Before we got a wagon I used to blow a bale of straw out into a pile, then layer it back in with silage in a Teagle 9090, draff, minerals or grain on top, it’s never going to be as accurate as a mixer wagon but it’s certainly works as an alternative. Ideally you would have a weighter on the forklift so you know what’s going in. That’s one of the advantages of the wagon is having a weigher let’s you know accurately what you are feeding.
