Measuring tape

Basically I’ve got a 50m fibreglass measuring tape, but when used at a reasonable length, the need to pull it taught for accurate measurement means it will stretch, to be honest it’s a bit like an elastic band, which isn’t ideal for squaring up a shed frame, so what make would you recommend please?

I bought a kite marked tape 100m job, set out a line of bolt boxes concreted them in . Went back to triangulate the other side using a 50m tape I had owned for years. Couldn't get anything to line up. Laid tapes out together the new tape was about 1 inch out per 20 ft bay.
Trading standards tested the tape too. The shops insurer paid out thousands to rectify.
The tape manufacturers were well known to trading standards.

Moral of story buy a steel tape.

we use a steel tape with a semi open reel as a bit of mud and dirt on the blade is not a problem when winding them in and they wind in fast, surprisingly the silver line ones are good value and last very well 50m £11 and 100m £21 always have 2 with you or you will be in the sh1t if you snap one when you are putting a set of bases in ect

Moral of the story - always compare a new tape against a known one before committing to a potentially expensive mistake. ;)

I had a Workzone steel tape from Aldi which served me well. In the end it snapped when it got caught on a piece of concrete.

Trying to avoid this, I swapped to a Bahco fibreglass tape and was pleased with it til a shed supplier told me they found fibreglass tapes stretched.

Might be wise to invest in a steel tape as well just in case...!
