Meat accounts for nearly 60% of all greenhouses gases from food production, study finds

Written by Oliver Milman from the Guardian

Production of meat worldwide emits 28 times as much as growing plants, and most crops are raised to feed animals bound for slaughter

The global production of food is responsible for a third of all planet-heating gases emitted by human activity, with the use of animals for meat causing twice the pollution of producing plant-based foods, a major new study has found.

The entire system of food production, such as the use of farming machinery, spraying of fertilizer and transportation of products, causes 17.3bn metric tonnes of greenhouse gases a year, according to the research. This enormous release of gases that fuel the climate crisis is more than double the entire emissions of the US and represents 35% of all global emissions, researchers said.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading the Guardian than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. And unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can. So you can see why we need to ask for your help. The Guardian’s independent, investigative journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we believe our perspective matters – because it might well be your perspective, too.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. Support the Guardian – it only takes a minute. Thank you.

I would like the esteemed researcher to tell me, how I can grow arable crops up here in the hills, he obviously knows far more about the 2/3 of the land in the UK than all the farmers. I go to Groundswell, they better speak there too, and explain how to look after the soil without animals in the system. I will listen with no pre conceived ideas, ooh better explain what to do with food waste that is presently fed to animals too in a way that does not produce landfill gas as well.

On another thread, I posted about rangelands and indigenous populations, and the comment in the article that it is racist and imperialist for white liberals to tell brown skinned people how to use their land, as it is generally the poor who rely on livestock agriculture.

I'm afraid one sided unbalanced articles, such as this, prevent me from buying The Guardian .Pasture reared livestock are carbon negative ,they eat the grass, burp a little and emit some methane. This methane enters the atmosphere and in,approx 8/10 years return to earth as carbon where its sequestered by the grass and so the cycle continues. Not one extra molecule is created.
They don't seem to identify different methods of meat production and their impacts. There is so much misinformation quoting wildly differing figures floating around social media with bias Vegan

@Clive @Chris F Is there any reason why such inflammatory and unbalanced journalism should be actively promoted on The Farming Forum ?

Well, off the top of my head two reasons:
1) Who is to say what is 'inflammatory and unbalanced' and what isn't ? Going to have an adjudicator on every outside source posted on here ?
2) Should folks on here not be aware of what the other 99% of the population is being told ? Stay close to your friends, but closer to your enemies.

Nothing wrong with that post being on TFF. Hopefully it will motivate farmers and industry representatives to get out and spread the counter-message (truth) and directly contact the Guardian, and others, presenting the facts in a readable article that they may be happy to publish.

It's no use shouting in the TFF echo chamber about such stuff.

they wouldn't have neck enough to come on here and defend it,
It seems you can't even tag the OP, don't know why that is @Chris F ?

You stay in the "how long have you been beating your wife" category if you want but I'd sooner not come on here and have that shoved down my throat

freedom of speech (foundations of tff). and surely it’s better to be informed about whats being said than have our heads in the sand ??
Mmm

Freedom of speech. I accepted the lies from the wildlife trust this morning on R4 about farmers being the biggest polluters of watercourses partly as there was no effective counter spokesperson

I see this thread as different as TFF have given an unfettered media portal for their stories. If I wanted to read bunk about the Royal family I'd subscribe to the daily Express. I come on TFF to hear about agriculture not fake news. I think there's a big difference

I did nearly delete it. But it all about where people are drawing lines and we have this discussion within farming as well. Do the emissions from fert belong with the fert companies or farmers.

Like many articles this takes a worse case scenario but it is what is being peddled in mainstream media. Putting your head in the sand and pretending it isn't being done won't help. I don't see that we are promoting it, I see that farmers are being presented with how they are being portrayed in the world. Forearmed is forewarned. If we understand the battle lines, we can defend ourselves.

My next article in Direct Driller writes about this subject as it happens.

I wonder if they load all the emissions from the mining of metals and minerals and oil, the construction and maintenance of roads on to electric cars when they call them zero emissions, not to mention the recycling/disposal emissions.
one rule for one and another for tuther
