I wonder if it's because of the impact on police licencing teams of these medical report requirements?

We all need to hassle our MPs, the NFU, the CLA and the BASC about this because it CAN'T go on.

My applications for renewal (FAC, Gun licence, and air weapons) was received by Police Scotland at the beginning of November by Recorded Delivery. Doctor has told me he hasn't received any letter (I posted it myself) but he says there is no problem. They are due for renewal on the 16th January (tomorrow). I was told a couple of weeks ago to contact the police if they had not arrived by the 13th. They hadn't so I contacted the police as instructed on the 13th. Police responded that everything was OK, and wanted to know why I was contacting them? Erm, you told me to?

Police Scotland is in total chaos. My guns were returned (after seizure) approximately five years ago. A quick glance at the paperwork revealed that the certificates were incorrect. To save any nonsense, I transferred them to the local firearms deler. Certificates "corrected" and guns returned.

Roll on to January 2022. Police here to check guns and certificates after reports of "two dead horses and vicious dogs". (One guess where that came from!). Everything checked out legal and correct, but FACs did not have any serial numbers recorded. So I have not had legal certificates for the last 5 years. Shrugged off as I am (after all the checks!) known to be OK! :ROFLMAO:

It just goes on and on. Half the problem is badly composed application forms and totally muddled procedures. Complicated forms which the man on the beat can't understand don't help. Legislation for air weapons is more complicated and demanding than firearms forms, but air weapons are controlled by Police Scotland and the rest by the Home Office. Everything seems to be duplicated with ridiculous requests. What relevance is it that I was caught driving at 45mph in a 30mph zone 50 years ago in Edinburgh? Total bollox!

Local Smallholder (Dentist - friend) had a visit to inspect his firearms cabinet - He simply told the inspector under oath that his firearms were in a certain room with only one door and no windows and should he (the inspector) be able to locate them then then he was welcome to remove them.
A half hour search revealed nothing so my friend asked the inspector to absent himself from the room for just 2 minutes whilst he retrieved them to show them to the inspector ....No further action

This guy signs many firearms application forms for his acquaintances.

West Mercia Police here. Last October / November I had about a seven week delay waiting for my medical cert sign off, even though I know the Doctor, the surgery told me several times that completing the medical forms are not a priority for Doctors during the present situation. Fair enough I suppose.
Luckily I got the med cert the day before the deadline to hand in my guns. I completed the On-line renewal pronto and all ended well...........:)

We are not the USA

No one has a "right" to bear arms.

It currently takes longer to get a driving licence than a FAC

Stop whinging

You do talk a lot of shyte on this subject.

We do have the right to "bear arms" as you put it - hence why there is an application process which ANYONE can apply.

It is upto the Application Process to decide you are not suitable, again because everyone automatically starts from the position of having the right to ownership of firearms

I had a panic last year at first lock down. Couldn't get hold of doctors...no change there really. Couldn't get appointment...no change there either. Was getting close ticket running out of date. Called Police headquarters for advice and they suggested depositing guns at a gun shop for safe keeping otherwise they would be confiscated. However all the gun shops where closed down because of lockdown.
I called TFA for advice and as ever they were very helpful. George Dunn called me back with the name of a doctor who could sort it for me within a couple of days.
Managed to get it sorted but then got a snotty letter from firearms officer saying I shouldn't have left it so late.... Sometimes wonder if its more trouble than its worth abiding by the rules.

Useful summary of the situation in the current .gov guide:

Limited extension of certificates

10.25 Where an application is made to the police for the renewal of a certificate at least 8 weeks before the certificate is due to expire, but the police are unable to decide the application before the certificate expires, section 28B of the 1968 Act automatically extends the validity of the certificate for a period of 8 weeks or until the police decide the application, whichever occurs first. The certificate’s terms and conditions will continue to apply during this period. Changes have been made to police IT systems to support the administration of this provision and to facilitate police forces generating a confirmatory letter to applicants who benefit from an extension under section 28B.

10.26 In the event that the application for renewal is subsequently granted, any period for which the certificate continued in force under section 28B will be treated for the purposes of section 28A(1) as part of the period for which the renewed certificate is in force, meaning that the total renewal period of a renewed certificate would be 5 years.

10.27 In the event that the application for renewal cannot be determined before the extended certificate expires, police forces may continue to issue a temporary permit to the applicant under section 7 of the Firearms Act 1968 authorising their continued possession of firearms and ammunition to which the expired certificate applies. Section 7 permits issued in these circumstances can allow for the continued possession of the firearms and ammunition that are specified on the applicant’s expired certificate
