Memory Test

My Mum's GP has referred her to the memory clinic for a test.

Has anyone else been with a parent to one of these tests.

I just wondered what sort of questions she will be asked and as i will be with her will I get any questions too.....which could be uncomfortable if my Mum is present as she does not think she has a poor memory or other things that she says and does are 'unusual'.

The questions are along the lines of what is todays date, who is the Prime Minister, and remembering an address she was given at some point in the chat. If the initial signs are not good, the person is usually referred on to further tests.
The more relaxed she is, the better the test, so just try to be cheerful and normal. I know it is worrying, but there is a lot of help out there if things are found to be slipping. It is best to know one way or the other so you can take things forward.

A very long drawn out process but finally today my Mother was given the news she has Alzheimers. It's sort of bittersweet but I am relieved to know that the way my Mum has spoken/behaved towards me and others is not really 'her'. She has a prescription now to hopefully slow things down. :(

Can't press the 'like' button for this, but relieved for you that as you say, her behaviour has a medical reason. Tough times and feel for you, remember her at her best.

Hi, I have been going down this road for about 4 years with my mother. The Medication has halted the decline, she has scored 75-85 % in all the tests each 6 months. (the test is exactly the same each time) they will stop the medication if it falls off the cliff and the score is suddenly 30. She now has the issue of a side affect which is causing heart rhythm issues and has just been told to stop the deponozil, we are now wondering which is the lesser of two evils.

The test is interesting, one odd one is can you pick the pen up, they then put it down again and now cover it with a sheet of paper, and ask her to pick it up again, apparently some patients cannot get the pen under the paper because they cannot see it, despite watching the paper cover it up.

PS. must call in and see who this Harry Barnes is!

There is a bit of new research that says all those newly diagnosed with Alzeimers should have their thyroid and Vit D levels tested. Apparently if those are out by much, it can make any symptoms much worse. Worth a blood test anyway.

Routine blood tests would be vitamin B12, thyroid, anaemia, maybe calcium. Rarely find them to be the cause but may aggravate things

Thanks for the replies. :)
Unfortunately my mum was unable to have her memory test when I first posted here as she had a long spell in hospital Nov/Dec and had to move to a nursing home in January. Whilst in hospital she had various blood tests and a brain scan which was showing significant cerebral atrophy.
