There is at least 200 years worth of coal under ground in the UK, some estimates even double that figure. The thing is... that although the coal by volume is there, it is often very far underground and, even then, in such thin seams that for its recovery to be economical the unit price would have to increase by well over 1000%.
When Mrs T was in office, and after, near-surface coal in Australia and elsewhere of good quality and in seams often >20' thick made the continued, dangerous mining of our deep, thin seams irrational.
