Merlo 32.6 and possibly CLAAS scorpion 6030cp

Just want to know what the opinion of these handlers are, all the good, bad and the uglies please. If we do go down that route it will likely be a second hand machine with a few thousand hours on it. In that case is there anything specific to look out for or to test?

Thanks,

we demoed a claas 6030 when we were trading our last 32.6 in, found the hydraulics better on the claas - faster and nicer joystick. like the merlo cab better and the merlo has far better visibility all round. Merlo is much smaller physicaly while having slightly more capacity. Went for another 32.6 top.

I love my 6030 we did 6000h in the first one but killed a transmission early under warranty I felt it arrived crocked after that nothing major It's not a great machine for road work and I think we replaced most of the hydraulic hoses on the boom . It's a drivers machine and I don't think anything else will touch it .

On a serious note there will be a choice (2nd hand) of powerplants in merlo, deutz, perkins and Kubota (Kubota being current). My choice would be Deutz.

What's the reliability like? Also do you have a merlo headstock? I ask this because when I asked the salesman about changing to a pin and cone headstock, as that is what we have, he wasn't keen. I find this strange as when I did a year out of uni at a CLAAS dealership there was no worries about changing it.

They are a nice machine from what I remember a few years ago. Is yours a cp or a normal sized one?

Reliability has been Ok so far - got it may last year , coming up to 1000hrs. A few teething problems but being delt with under warrant ok. Got an allbut cone and pin carriage on it.

Yes I loved mine! Until it combusted at 2 y old! Tried the cp but just not a patch on original 6030 and couldn't afford a bigger one so opted for a merlo 40.7

Same attachments and it was at its limit when fully in but the original 6030 coped easily. I did go from a 7m machine to the class and missed the reach,so was pleased with reach and lift on merlo! Had a 2011 32.6 here for a week and I was impressed with lift and easy to get in and out but no fancy weigh thing on it so probably a new one would cut out sooner

Class had better lock with fewer turns of steering wheel but the merlo is narrower and shorter with better lift and reach and when I chose the price was about the same and they altered attachments! So I'm happy enough. Fancy weigh thing now working well but did take a bit of getting right,it was one of the first with it on though!

CLAAS/Cherry HEADSTOCK SAFETY WARNING:
Suddenly found our headstock was disconnecting the locking pins during balecart on our Claas 6030 CP - VERY DANGEROUS .
The whole balegrab could have come off killing me or anyone nearby . I only noticed it because the pins "flashed" in the lights when stacking in the shed.
It seems to be the solenoid was playing up, which has now been replaced - but am alarmed that this can happen - it should be fail safe .
We have fitted a manual valve for extra safety.
Otherwise 6030 CP very stable & capable machine for our small mixed farm (except for useless air con).

32.6 2008 was a deutz, they went to perkins a year or so later, 2014 kubota
Deutz in ours was a good engine no problems, (there is some problems on some deutz due to a hydraulic pump running off the timing gear I think )
perkins have a cylone air filter thing on top of bonnet deutz dont.

merlo tines are pretty poor rattling around and a fiddly catch to undo to get them off, I now have an albutt carriage so can drop them off easy now but they still slide around .
